Celebrate summer at some of the events taking place in the Mother City’s this February
There’s simply too much to see, do and experience to even think it’s no-fun February! We’ve selected some of the hottest things you can’t afford to not be doing in the next 28 days. Also, it’s still summer so you know that means you need to be out and about soaking up the sun (and the epic sunsets!). Check out a cool open-air cinema, an awesome EDM festival and more this February in the Mother City.
ZANDO CAPE TOWN 10S (2 – 3 FEB)
Gear up for the 2018 edition of the popular Tens Rugby Festival, now in its 10th year, presented by Zando – it’s the amateur sporting event we’ve all been looking forward to. Taking place at Hamilton’s Rugby Club in Green Point on Friday, 2 and Saturday, 3 February this event is set to be the biggest and best yet. Featuring entertainment by Fokofpolisiekar, GoodLuck, Sketchy Bongo, DJ Sox, Majozi, the Light Years and more, the music promises to be as great as the game.

THE GALILEO OPEN AIR CINEMA (OCT 2017 – APR 2018)
If the idea of cuddling up under the stars whilst watching a movie, munching popcorn and intermittently gazing at gorgeous surrounds appeals to you, then best you book your spot to watch your favourite movie at one of the Galileo Open Air Cinemas. Every week, cinephiles can grab some popcorn (or other tasty gourmet treats from the vendors on site, or order a picnic hamper), settle down on the lush lawns at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the V&A Waterfront, Bloemendal and various venues in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands to see firm favourites, cult classics and many others.

FRANSCHHOEK SUMMER WINES FESTIVAL (3 FEB)
Head to this year’s Franschhoek Summer Wines Festival to enjoy some of best wines the region has to offer. Look out for a superb selection of whites, rosés, Méthode Cap Classiques and light reds. Accompaniments include live music and delicious food, so best to make a day of it. Mark it in your calendar right now as this is one social affair you don’t want to miss. And be sure to don your dressiest outfit for this day of drinking.

HOPE@PAUL CLUVER SUMMER FESTIVAL (DEC 2017 – FEB 2018)
Support a very worthy cause as you enjoy a spectacular concert and good company in a majestic forest theatre in the Elgin Valley. The Hope@PaulCliver Summer Concerts appeals to both young and old, and includes Watershed and Emo Adams on the February line-up. And the best part is that the proceeds of these events go to the Thembalitsha Foundation in Elgin, an organisation dedicated to eradicating poverty in the area. Make sure to pack your picnic baskets and head there early to secure your spot. A variety of food and drinks will be available for purchase.

STELLENBOSCH WINE FESTIVAL (23 – 25 FEB)
One of the best ways to experience the magic of the Winelands town of Stellenbosch is through the product they are best known for – wine! The annual Stellenbosch Wine Festival presents hundreds of wines from the area, from large and award-winning producers to smaller and niche boutique wineries. Presented by Pick n Pay and taking place that the Coetzenburg Sports Grounds, this is a family friendly event with plenty of food and lifestyle offerings too.

KIRSTENBOSCH SUMMER CONCERTS (NOV 2017 – MAR 2018)
Attending a Summer Sunset Concert at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is, arguably one of the most quintessential Cape Town experience you can have in the summer months. It’s the ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon – simply gather your friends, pack a picnic, get comfortable and enjoy the sweet sounds of some of the country’s foremost musicians, including Freshlyground, The Parlotones, Mi Casa and more, with international acts often making an appearance too. Remember to bring a good attitude and not to leave a mess behind.

NELSON MANDELA 27 FOR FREEDOM RUN (10 FEB)
Celebrate and recognise the release of Nelson Mandela from prison 28 years ago at the 27 For Freedom race in Paarl. Choose between a 5km or 10km course, while more serious runners can opt for the 27km route. All races start and end at the Drakenstein Correctional Facility (formerly Victor Verster Prison) and follows the same path that Mandela did on his internationally acclaimed ‘walk to freedom’ after 27 years in prison.

ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL (9 FEB)
For the fifth year running, the South African edition of the Ultra Music Festival is guaranteed to satisfy your EDM craving. Taking place at the Cape Town Stadium, partygoers can get ready for a summer party like no other. Look forward to sounds of Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, Carnage and more… it’s going to be electrifyingly epic!
COST: Tickets will be released in phases and can be bought via Ultrasouthafrica.com/tickets/cape-town, and costs range from R700/p to R1500/p depending on the ticket type.
