The Cape Town Cricket Sixes smashes expectations this year at the Western Province Cricket Club in Rondebosch from Friday, 14 February, to Sunday, 16 February.
The event is suitable for the whole family - everyone from junior U/11s to seniors can get involved, including women’s leagues in soccer and cricket.
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Cape Town Cricket Sixes is organised by Sean Young, Ryan Christian, Martin Tucker and Trenton Birch. In 2015, Sean Young played in the Graham Gooch Cricket Carnival; a Maties and UCT alumni cricket event. The Monday after that event, Cape Town Cricket Sixes was born, and five years down the line it has grown into a sport, lifestyle and community festival (that’s not only about cricket).
ROUND-ROBIN TOURNAMENTS
The Cape Town Cricket Sixes event covers cricket, football and rugby. Cricket is played for 6 overs per innings, 8 players per team and 8 teams per league group. Each group plays through a round-robin-style tournament followed by knockout playoffs and finals.
Soccer is six a side with 12 teams per league following a world cup-style format: it's a tournament-style competition that starts with a league format then moves on to a knockout phase. Tag rugby is 5–8 players per team depending on whether it’s a tournament or social match.
All three sporting codes cater for juniors, women and men across all skill levels, so there’s something for everyone and you can book your team online.
Winning teams score bragging rights for 12 months, trophies, medals and prize hampers.
WPCC VENUE + WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
The Western Province Cricket Club (WPC) in Rondebosch is a premier multi-sporting facility. There will be corporate hospitality tents, a VIP Hendrick's Gin Garden, a Family Zone, a Food Village and plenty of shaded spectator areas.
There’s something for the whole family on and off the field including a sports zone to watch all the Super Rugby, Premier League and Proteas cricket action. Plus live music from the likes of Goodluck. You can also catch past legends like Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini, JP Duminy and Meyrick Pringle in action.
The Family Zone, in partnership with Freedom Adventure Parks, will have climbing walls, jumping castles, giant snakes and ladders, face painting, puppet shows and much more.
