Your Guide to the Loerie Awards Cape Town
Everything you need to know about the Oscars of the brand communications world, from the dress code to the after party
Creatives, soothsayers of consumerism and leaders of the media world make their way to the Mother City to crown the year’s most successful campaigns at the 2014 Loerie Awards at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Saturday, 20 September and Sunday, 21 September 2014.
The prestigious awards are presented annually to honour South Africa’s finest brand communications specialists in architecture, direct marketing, live events, video, digital media, design and print and radio advertising. Judging takes place at the historic Cape Town City Hall starting on Monday, 15 September, while delegates and entrants take part in Creative Week Cape Town events, which lead up to the much-anticipated Oscar awards of branding. Shortlisted finalists will be announced during the several days preceding the Saturday and Sunday awards ceremonies at the CTICC.
The ceremony and week’s worth of events culminate in a massive Sunday after party, hosted by Channel O, at Shimmy Beach Club in celebration of the ad world’s ingenuity. Not to mention, this year the Loeries are encouraging delegates to come together on Saturday night on Long Street to explore the Mother City’s party artery. There will be a ‘The Wolf of Long Street’ jol at Fiction, and Julep Cocktail Bar will host the VIP lounge.
First launched in 1978 and, until recently, presented in the small Kwa-Zulu Natal town of Margate, the influential Loerie Awards are a highlight on the brand communications industry calendar and, with their promotion of innovation and originality, vital to the growth of the creative services sector.

OFFICIAL AFTER PARTY FOR THE 2014 LOERIE AWARDS IN CAPE TOWN
In an effort to create a village within the city to bring delegates together in one place, everyone is encouraged to spend their Saturday night on Long Street, where there is an endless array of hotspots where people can meet and mingle. The trendy little Julep Bar, which is hidden on a side street off the main vein, will serve as the VIP Lounge; although, there are enough cool bars and clubs to make anyone feel like a very important person.
CapeTownMagazine.com recommends:
- Beerhouse: This bar boasts the largest variety of beer in town (from Mzansi and abroad), big communal wooden tables and an even bigger street side balcony that’s perfect for housing the crafty and the cool.
- Neighbourhood: Toast to creativity with colourful cocktails and simple yet delicious gastropub goodies at this local favourite.
- Fiction: If you love to dance to anything and everything that’s out of the ordinary, Fiction is the go-to spot for every alternative dance genre – nu-rave, indie, drum ‘n’ bass, techno – you can think of.
- Tjing Tjing: Clink glasses against the backdrop of the beautiful Cape Town skyline at this so-cool-it-hurts rooftop bar. Add to that tasty tapas and rare, interesting wines and you have yourself a party.
- Royale Eatery: If you’d rather talk business while breaking bread, Royale Eatery offers what many a hungry Capetonian would call the best burger in town. The eatery claims over 50 gourmet bun-and-patty combinations that are perfect for lining the stomach before a big night out.
The official after party for the 2014 Loerie Awards is hosted by 2009 Loerie Award-winning music station Channel O at Shimmy Beach Club at the V&A Waterfront on Sunday, 21 September from 9pm until the wee hours of the morning. All tickets for the award ceremonies include entrance into the after party.
