Durbie Dash in Durbanville
On your bike! No, literally.
The annual bike-bonanza is back and it’s returning to Durbanville as per usual. This festival for all the lovers of unicycles with an extra wheel has an event for everyone and every level of fitness. The Durbie Dash is speeding your way on Saturday, 29 October 2016 and it’s being hosted at Durbanville High School on Langenhoven Road. The events start pretty early, so if you’re brave enough to try the most intense race, prepare to start it at 6am.
There will be four mountain biking events and two road biking events, so have a quick look - see which suits you and enter as soon as possible! Only after you’ve entered can you post it on all your social media and just wait for the influx of compliments on your bravery and fitness prowess. (Jokes, everybody hates a boast-post).
RACES AT THE 2016 DURBIE DASH IN DURBANVILLE
Mountain biking races:
- The Altydgedacht Dust Buster – 12-km – The first of the mountain races is suitable for families and is more of a fun ride than it is a race. Even those who don’t want to compete love a good spot of exercise on a lovely Saturday. This events starts at 7:30am.
- The Bloemendal Rock Buster – 25-km – The second shortest distance at the Durbie Dash is by no means a small feat. 25-km is a considerable distance, and it is all on rough terrain. This event starts at 7am.
- The Meerendal Muscle Jammer – 45-km – Once again, this distance is no small achievement. It is approximately 45-kms more than most people can manage, so be proud. You really do have fitness prowess. This event starts at 6:30am.
- The Fair Cape Chain Breaker – 65-km – It’s 55-km from the centre of Cape Town to Stellenbosch, just keep that in mind. This is a tough one, do not be fooled by the distance. Entrants in this event will climb over 1700m in total over the course and must only be entered by serious athletes. This event starts at 6am.
Road biking races:
- The Winelands Meander – 46-km – This route will take you on the outskirts of Durbanville and will explore some of the lovely wine and wheat fields. This event starts at 7:15am.
- The Wheatlands Dash – 90-km – This route is the same as the Winelands Meander but just goes a little further into the fields. You’ll get to experience Boland country in its best form. This event starts at 6am.
Please note that there is a cut off time for all of the bike races at the 2016 Durbie Dash, and that time is noon. All of the races start before 8am, so you have an absolute minimum of four and a half hours (depending on the race you select) to complete the course. Good luck, and take care!
For spectators, there is also some fun to be had. The on-site KFM radio will keep you up to date on the races progress while you have a chance to indulge your appetite with some delicious eats from local cafes and stalls. There will also be a beer and wine tent for those who need alcohol just to dare think about entering a bike race. No judgement, we would be right there with you.
