Bonnie Tyler Concert in Cape Town
The Welsh singer famously holding out for a hero performs in the Mother City for two nights only
Turn around…..now turn back around and picture yourself singing along to the unforgettable opening lines from Bonnie Tyler’s (in)famous 80s break-up ballad performed live when the Welsh mega-star takes over the stage at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Friday, 6 September and Saturday, 7 September 2013.
We’ll admit, the shoulder-padded, big-haired songstress may not top many peoples’ must-see lists. But, we can also say that it’s not every day that South African audiences get to experience multi-platinum selling, Grammy-nominated icons on our oft neglected shores, and since it’s highly likely you already know the words to most of Tyler’s songs anyway, why not make a night of it?
The blonde belter hasn’t performed in Mzansi in 20 years, and this time around she’s here to promote her latest album (yes, she’s still making music after more than 30 years in the business), “Rocks and Honey”, which features the single, ‘Believe in Me’, that represented the UK at 2013’s Eurovision Song Contest.
The Bonnie Tyler concert is also the perfect opportunity to whip out the spandex and legwarmers or finally test out that teased side-pony do you’ve been wondering if you can pull off. After all, listening to the singer’s quintessentially 80s power-pop ballads, like ‘Holding Out for a Hero’ and ‘If You Were a Woman and I Was a Man’, is like travelling back in time, so you may as well dress the part. But if you’re looking for more reasons why you shouldn’t miss the Welsh Madonna (kind of) in concert, here are 10 great ones!
10 Reasons to go to the Bonnie Tyler Concert in Cape Town
- Total Eclipse of the Heart. “Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I’m only falling apart” is probably the best break-up line to ever appear in any break-up song. Ever. You could bring someone to the show and then dump them when she sings this. (And then get back together again when she goes “I really need you tonight!”)
- It’s going to be like a giant karaoke party. Let’s be real. We’ve all sang at least one of Bonnie Tyler’s hits while alone in front of the mirror or tipsy at a karaoke bar, and this is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to shed your embarrassment and be part of one giant, awesome sing-a-along.
- Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas might be there. Er, probably definitely not, but Bonnie Tyler is related to the A-listers through marriage and even sang ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ at their wedding. So there’s like a 000,1% chance they may show up, right?
- Bonnie Tyler is a little bit country… Her first album and breakout singles ‘Lost in France’ and ‘It’s a Heartache’ were definitely carved from the country music mould, but Tyler ditched the twang and strings for good old-fashioned pop in the 80s.
- AND she’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. She’s so rock ‘n’ roll, in fact, that when she was diagnosed with large vocal nodules early on in her career, she ignored doctors’ orders to rest her voice, and the result was her signature husky sound. Take that, medical world!
- Bonnie Tyler and Rod Stewart were separated at birth. Not really, but it’s an easy mistake to make since they both have those raspy voices and tend to wear their blonde locks in similar styles.
- She kicked Michael Jackson’s butt (figuratively). We know it sounds like we’re totally obsessed with ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, but the epic single did knock Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’ off the number one spot on the UK charts, and in a 2013 survey the British nation voted it as the most popular song to sing in the shower.
- Hipsters can attend ironically. Bonnie Tyler was most popular in the 80s, so you could say that her music is retro now, right? Hipsters can wear their real legit vintage Wayfarers and convince their friends that going to the concert is so cool that it’s not cool, which actually makes it cool again.
- She may change outfits as many times as she’s changed her name. That would really only make it a total of two changes since ‘Bonnie Tyler’, who was born Gaynor Hopkins, first chose Sherene Davis as her stage name before deciding on her current moniker.
- Bonnie Tyler is single-handedly responsible for the return of pleather. Again, this is more speculation than fact, but we’re willing to bet that after this concert demand for black, shiny onesies is going to skyrocket.
