Utopia Music Festival
Soak up the sounds of rocking good tunes at this inaugural outdoor music fiesta
Spend your Freedom Day weekend (from Friday, 26 to Sunday, 28 April 2013) at the inaugural jol that promises to become a calendar highlight. The Utopia Music Festival sounds off for the first time in history at Nekkies Resort, an iconic outdoor party ground located just 4km outside of Worcester and a mere hour’s drive from the Mother City.
The brainchild of BL productions – a collaboration between two event company giants – the alfresco party was born out of the organisers’ intense desire to provide music lovers with a quality experience featuring only incredible local talent in a great setting.
It goes without saying, then, that the music fiesta aims to live up to its makers’ aim with three different music stages (including rock, EDM and more) and one comedy stage. What’s more, we’ve been told that the look of the main stage promises to be a surprise and festival highlight; though, regardless, with hot local acts and icons, like Fokofpolisiekar, Karen Zoid and Desmond and the Tutus on the bill, the platform's appearance is of secondary concern.
Alternatively, electronic music lovers can stomp away the night at the Oasis Stage, a deep house and techno platform located along the banks of the Breede River, and campers can get a front row view of up-and-coming talent at the Go “BOS” stage in the campsite, a venue where anyone with a smidge of talent, a musical instrument or just the guts to get up on stage can register for a spot on the open mic line-up to go... bos!
What’s more, the festival hosts a comedy stage where cutting-edge comedians are set to pay tribute to the late Rustum August, founder of the comedic collective Starving Comics. The stand-up comedian’s agency secured gigs for on-the-rise comics, often giving these eager laugh-makers their first stage opportunity. The stand-up acts will integrate August’s unique look at life and philosophies into comedy routines to bring the laughs, giggles and guffaws at this first-time jol.
Lastly, the horseshoe-shaped food court will, no doubt, keep those rumbles at bay and keep the energies high for a weekend of rocking, stomping and laughing in the lush Worcester destination. Lest we forget, the camping area is said to host a convenient breakfast bar, so late-risers can roll out of their tents and straight on to breakfast before tackling the days’ events.
