Liverpool FC vs Ajax Cape Town Football Match
PSL scuppers City’s Ajax Cape Town match plans
Eighteen-time Premier League winner Liverpool FC has cancelled their plans to travel to South Africa for an international friendly after days of negotiation between Ajax Cape Town and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) soured.
After it came to light that the Mother City’s Urban Warriors original commitment to a May match against the British giants violated PSL regulations, the City of Cape Town scrambled to negotiate a different date of play and opponent with the English side, but to no avail.
The league’s refusal to allow Ajax Cape Town to take on the British Reds on 21 May 2013 at the Cape Town Stadium was part of an effort to ensure that the limelight remains on the Nedbank Cup; the local tournament final is scheduled for Saturday, 25 May 2013.
“The club (Ajax) asked for permission to play a match. We don’t allow international friendlies while the season is still on because it competes with our own events and our own sponsors,” PSL chairperson Derek Blanckensee told Sport24. “All factors are considered, but the league operates under a set of rules and the clubs are all aware of it.”
After a dismal season, the Urban Warriors are not participating in the tournament, and are still in the midst of a battle to stave off relegation to the lower leagues.
Though disappointed, the City of Cape Town re-emphasized its commitment to bringing world-class entertainment and football to its shores.
