AGAINST THE GRAIN: An Exhibition by Kelly John Gough
Oil meets wood at this unique fine artist’s showcase in a hip gallery
Kelly John Gough’s latest exhibition, ‘Against the Grain’, will be appearing at the Objekt.Design.Art (ODA) Gallery in Franschhoek from Sunday, 24 September to Wednesday, 25 October 2017. Come along to the opening on Sunday (Heritage Day) to see what this unique fine artist has been up to. You will have the opportunity to join Kelly on an artist walkabout around the exhibition where he’ll lead beholders around his collection of work, tell you a little bit about his pieces and answer your questions.
Known for using oil paint on a wooden panel ‘canvas’, Kelly has a particular interest in the human figure as subject matter. Inspired by the techniques of Renaissance artists such as Caravaggio and the play of light and shadows in Rembrandt’s lighting style, Kelly creates great contrasts between light and dark for a powerful effect. His works are mainly monochromatic, using black oil paint, gaining subtle colour from the wood panel showing through.
The ODA Gallery is a fine art gallery that showcases the works of various artists from Cape Town and surrounds, both established and up-and-coming, to give their art a platform. In doing so it encourages a wider appreciation of fine art as a thriving art form in South Africa. It also aims to show art that has a feeling of being current and in sync with what is happening in the now.
Wine and snacks will be served at the opening to keep you going.
