Wine Tasting Safari at Saxenburg Estate
Sip on statement vintages while watching wildlife roam at this age-old Stellenbosch winery
There is no shortage of wine tasting options in the expansive Stellenbosch region, but there are very few farms where you can sip and swirl while being circled by grazing springbok, zebra and more. Saxenburg is one of these rarities. The age-old estate offers a truly unique South African sampling experience in the form of its safari tasting, which gives visitors the chance to enjoy its superb wines within a charming mini game park, just over 30 minutes from Cape Town.
The whole adventure begins either up at the traditional tasting room or outside in front of the old slave bell. From here, visitors take a short leisurely walk down to the farm’s wildlife camp, and during the stroll, they’re treated to stories about the history of the estate – it was founded back in 1693 and has gone through multiple changes since – and about the thriving South African wine industry in general.
At the park, guests are led to a raised platform that sits amidst the game, and this is where the fun really begins. Here, while looking out at zebra, springbok, fallow deer, wildebeest and ostriches roaming against the backdrop of Table Mountain, safari-goers can indulge in a full tasting of Saxenburg’s premium Private Collection, which includes six red and white wines.
And not just any wines. Thanks to ideal soil conditions and a champion winemaker who’s perfected his craft over 25 years at the farm, the estate’s vino is renowned as being superb. Its beautifully balanced Shiraz is recognised as one of the finest in South Africa (in fact, the estate has become synonymous with the varietal), its velvety smooth Cabernet Sauvignon has previously been labelled as the best in the world, its Merlot and Pinotage are both stand-out attention grabbers, and its Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are leaders in the category of white wine (all are available for purchase at the tasting centre).
In addition to the six samples, visitors will also be spoiled with a full glass of Méthode Cap Classique and a snacks platter that comes piled high with a selection of cheeses, an assortment of crackers, biltong, droëwors (dried sausage), nuts and artisan chocolates.
It’s a package built to make a mark on the memory, a comprehensive tasting journey and viewing adventure that’s like few others out there. So, if you’re on the hunt for a wine voyage that goes far beyond the standard sip and swirl, put Saxenburg and its gathering of game on your radar.
