United Underground at Mercury Live
Punk rock and heavy metal come together at the Mother City’s mosh pit mecca
7th Son, Sabretooth , Half Price and Bulletscript - artists famous for giving fame and fortune the finger - converge on Mercury Live’s stage on Friday, 25 January 2013 to play one unforgettable gig under the banner of the underground scene.
These diverse acts are coming together to fuse their fan bases and to show audiences that though their sounds may be different, the bands themselves are more alike than anybody realizes. In a South Africa where punk and metal are massively overshadowed by kwaito and Afrikaans pop, the genres nonetheless motor on thanks to musicians that uphold one ultimate belief: you play because you f*%$ing love what you do.
Each group is established in its own right, so there’s no headliner or filler, just a killer line-up.
Line-up for United Underground at Mercury Live:
- 7th Son
This rude-rock-reggae band is made up of Nic (vocals & guitar), Myles(trumpet), Yanick (lead guitar), Simon(saxophone), Miggs(bass) and Nick (drums), talented musos who get together to put on one of the best shows in Cape Town. As festival veterans who have played at Splashy Fen, Up The Creek, and Obs Fest, to name a few, the group boasts a well-honed performance that will, no doubt, have the crowd dancing from the bar to the mosh pit and back again.
- Sabretooth
Best described as a metal powerhouse; this six-piece is made up of Mauri (vocals), Charles (guitar & backing vocals), Dean (guitar), Nikolai (keyboard), Ryan (bass) and Damian (drums). Their sound harkens back to old-school 80s greats, but also introduces a modern edge sonically similar to Avenged Sevenfold; this is the act to catch if you want your hair blown back by a guitar amp.
- Half Price
Band members Peter (vocals & guitar), Markus (bass & vocals), Rene (guitar) and Kyle (drums) make up this comedic upstart of a punk band that bills itself as being 90% politically incorrect and 10% politically incompetent. With more on stage antics than a circus, and with influences squeezed from a spectrum that ranges from one extreme to another – think from Rancid to Boney M - their live stage show is incredibly entertaining.
- Bulletscript
A five-piece metal band comprising of seasoned professionals from other Cape Town bands, Bulletscript, made up of George (vocals), Jacques (Guitar), Matt (lead guitar), JJ (bass)and Kyle (drums), is a hard hitting act that breeds heavy choruses and melodies made for hand-banging. They are sonically similar to Slayer and Slipknot.
