Standing Strong Against Abuse
The Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation is Standing Strong Against Abuse!
As a part of the ‘16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children’ campaign, the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation is making their contribution with an event at the V&A Waterfront Clock Tower on Saturday, 3 and Sunday, 4 December 2016.
Violence and domestic abuse is something that women and children suffer through all over the world and the international campaign (16 Days) aims to bring this very real and frightening issue to the front of people’s minds. We all watched in horror as the story of Reeva Steenkamp reached our television screens, and the foundation set up in her name is determined that it will never happen to another woman or child, anywhere in the world.
The event itself will see Liesl Schoonraad, and other top South African strength athletes, attempt to flip a record number of truck tyres (weighing 80kgs each) in two days as proof that women are strong too. The goal is to reach 100 tons of tyres being flipped in two days, a tall order for any athlete! One hundred tonnes is equal to 34 African elephants, five tug boats and 100 Bantam bakkies.
The proceeds from the event go towards the wider distribution of the Reeva Pack. What is a Reeva Pack you might ask? Well, a Reeva Pack is put together by the foundation to educate and inform people about what exactly constitutes abuse, what they should do to stop it, where they can go for help as well as inspiring stories from women that have survived domestic abuse circumstances.
If you can’t be there on the day, you can still contribute to the cause by texting ‘STRONG’ to 38223 to donate R10, or to 40117 to donate R20. Every little bit counts and your contribution could go a long way to freeing someone from an abusive situation and giving them a new start in life.
