Orchids of the World at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden
Elegant and exotic blooms will light up the room at this festive flower show
There’s something elegant and alluring about orchids. Exotic, extraordinary and synonymous with luxury, these delicate flowers have long been loved for their intricate patterns, colours and shapes. On Saturday, 17 October 2015, The Cape Orchid Society’s spring show, Orchids of the World, will be gracing the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens with an outstanding display of gorgeous flowers from around the globe.
A fun, family-friendly event, there will be numerous orchids and other exotic plants on display, some of which will be on sale, along with various works of art. Orchidaceae is one of the largest flowering plant families, with 26, 049 species falling under its umbrella – a number which is constantly expanding. All orchids share some very prominent characteristics, including bilateral symmetry of the flower, fused stamens and carpels, a highly modified petal, and either monopodial (stem grows from a single bud) or sympodial (a series of adjacent shoots, which grow, bloom and cease to grow and are replaced) growth patterns.
Do something different over the weekend. Spring is here, so what better time to spruce up your home with a pretty flower or two?
