Nelson Mandela Memorial Event at Cape Town Stadium
Honour the life of the great unifier at a commemorative concert in the Mother City
The City of Cape Town invites the public to pay tribute to the life of the late Nelson Mandela at a free Cape Town Stadium ceremony featuring international star Annie Lennox as well as famed local acts Freshlyground, Johnny Clegg and Ladysmith Black Mambazo on Wednesday, 11 December 2013. The commemorative concert starts at 4pm (doors open at 2pm) and runs until 11pm.
Aside from performances by the Scottish diva and the aforementioned South African acts, the Bala Brothers, Allou April, Carla Diamond and Cape Town-based choirs are billed to salute Madiba with song. Additionally, prominent politicians and former Springbok Francois Pienaar will pay homage to the legendary anti-Apartheid leader with impassioned speeches.
There is no charge to attend the event, but those who’d like to claim a seat in the stadium need to pick up a coupon to gain entry. These coupons – one individual can collect up to five – can be retrieved from Computicket stands and Shoprite and Shoprite/Checkers outlets across Cape Town upon presentation of a passport, driver’s licence or South African ID. The coupons will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
The coupons also entitle holders to free transport from and to the city centre from 12pm on the day via Golden Arrow, MyCiTi and Metrorail services. Additionally, there will be a free MyCiTi shuttle running between the Civic Centre and the Cape Town Stadium before, during and after the event.
Those unable to attend the event can take part in a number of other tributes across the Western Cape in the lead-up to Madiba’s private funeral in Qunu, Eastern Cape on Sunday, 15 December 2013. Here’s a full list of additional memorial services in Cape Town and surrounds.
