Live Earth Concert in Cape Town
Global warming activist Al Gore and ‘Happy’ singer Pharrell Williams announce Cape Town as one of the venues for the international climate change event in June 2015!
Cape Town has been declared one of the six host cities for the international Live Earth Concert, a worldwide show in support of climate change that’s poised to hit the global calendar for one night only, across seven continents, on Thursday, 18 June 2015.
The return of the 24-hour shindig was announced by Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore, new media entrepreneur Kevin Wall and singer-producer Pharrell Williams at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, 21 January 2015. Pharrell will also be performing in Cape Town and Johannesburg in September 2015 - there are only two shows so book your tickets quickly and subscribe to our newsletter for updates!
Aside from the Mother City, Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing and Sydney will also host the four- to six-hour concerts. A final show featuring a band of research scientists will take place at a research station in Antarctica.
The shows will be broadcast across the globe and will run consecutively, making this the biggest event of its kind ever to be staged. With lauded Grammy Award-winning icon Pharrell Williams, who performed at the inaugural event in 2007, taking on the role of creative director, audiences and viewers can look forward to seeing a top-notch production with some of the world’s best musos and bands on stage.
Co-founders Gore and Wall aim to revive the worldwide fiesta to raise awareness and galvanise global support in the lead up to the discussions that will take place at the UN climate change conference in Paris in December 2015.
"It is absolutely crucial that we build public will for an agreement," said Gore, "the purpose is to have a billion voices with one message, to demand climate action now."
