Learn Italian with Società Dante Alighieri
Amore Italiano? Learn to speak the beautiful language with this series of fun, informal classes
‘La vita è bella’
Imagine yourself drifting along a narrow canal in Venice, surrounded by ancient buildings, a maze of cobble-stone alleyways with flocks of pigeons and gulls descending in great clouds on unsuspecting tourists. The handsome, Italian gondolier is a dark-haired, moustachioed Adonis with muscles bulging beneath his striped t-shirt as he sings softly and expertly paddles the vessel forwards. He looks at you and your eyes connect, and there’s a moment of undeniable frisson. He says something to you and it sounds beautiful and romantic. You blush and respond that you think he’s gorgeous too (the only Italian that you know). He laughs and then you get out your phrasebook and realise that he was actually telling you that a pesky pigeon relieved itself on your shirt. Your idyllic scenario is ruined and you feel like jumping into the canal… all because you never learnt Italian.
This sad tale can be avoided with Italian language lessons! Società Dante Alighieri is offering just such a series of classes in Hatfield Street in Gardens every Tuesday and Thursday evening from Tuesday, 21 July onwards.
The 32 hour course is fun, informative and suitable for beginners, with a relaxed but professional environment perfect for practicing pronunciation without feeling awkward. Italian is most definitely a Romance Language as anyone whose heard it will testify. Descended from Latin, it retains the ancient language’s contrast between short and long consonants and is remarkably expressive – spoken as much with gestures of the hands as it is with the mouth.
The classes will give you the grounding and vocabulary you need to speak the basics of the beautiful language so that next time you’re in Italy you’ll be able to look at a menu and know what you’re ordering. And you’ll also be able to understand what handsome Italian gondoliers are trying to tell you, which is equally important. If you have a penchant for Italian cuisine (and who doesn’t love pizza and pasta?) you may want to book for the Goatshed Restaurant’s themed Italian food evening on Friday, 14 August 2015.
