Launch of I'm the Girl Who Was Raped by Michelle Hattingh
Listen to one woman’s brave account of her journey back to self after being raped
The launch of Michelle Hattingh’s inspirational memoir, this event will see Hattingh in conversation with Jen Thorpe, the celebrated author of The Peculiars, at the Book Lounge on Thursday, 28 April 2016 at 5:30pm.
Hattingh’s first novel documents her struggle to reclaim her sense of self after being raped at the beach whilst celebrating attaining her degree with a psychology thesis that ironically dealt with men’s perceptions on rape. After she was raped, Hattingh immediately knew that she would never be herself again – she would now be ‘the girl who was raped.’
On a mission to recover her identity, whilst dealing with the taint she feels, and the consequential loss of friendships and her job, Hattingh relays her journey in an insightful and extremely courageous way, in order to stand up for the women of South Africa – a country that has over 147 incidents of rape per day as a conservative estimate.
Hattingh is a truly inspiring lady who is currently the senior online content producer at Marie Claire SA. She’s had work published in multiple publications including the Mail & Guardian, and her discussion of her book promises to be an evocative, interesting and inspiring account of a very personal path to recovery.
