Karen Zoid and Zolani Mahola Live in Concert at the Fugard Theatre
A powerful collaboration between two premier South African songstresses
In a marriage of exceptional local talent and extraordinary musical ability, gifted singer Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground fame and celebrated South African rock icon Karen Zoid will take to the stage of the intimate Fugard Theatre in District Six, Cape Town, to perform together on Wednesday and Thursday, 10 and 11 October 2012.
As both artists are renowned as veritable powerhouses separately, having played significant roles in the development of their respective genres, it’s bound to be nothing short of phenomenal to watch them combine their distinctive sounds at this collaborative concert.
As lead vocalist of much-loved, multi-award-winning local band Freshlyground – a seven-man Cape Town-based group that’s made marks globally with their infectious Afro-pop melodies (think the vibrant ‘Doo Be Doo’ and ‘Pot Belly’) – the honey-voiced Eastern Cape-born Zolani claims a heap of musical prowess to match her captivating stage persona. Though the vivacious singer has pulled in numerous accolades with her fellow band members –including several South African Music Awards (SAMA) and an MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act – she most recently cemented herself in the minds of the masses with her catchy contribution to Shakira’s 2010 FIFA World Cup theme song ‘Time for Africa’.
Similarly, since launching her first gold-status solo album ‘Poles Apart’ back in 2002, the principled Karen Zoid has also established herself in both English and Afrikaans circles as one of South Africa’s most timeless and adored female rock artists. She’s been recognised by world-renowned publications, such as the popular TIME magazine, and she’s performed alongside international greats like Seal, Metallica, UB40 and John Mayer. What’s more, although all six of her albums have been met with great success (and significant radio play), the SAMA-winning singer-songwriter’s forte undeniably lies in offering memorable and moving live performances, a point proven time and again by previous highly poignant, emotionally-charged shows at the Fugard Theatre.
Needless to say, then, fans can expect to be twice as inspired and doubly entertained this October with a dual helping of unplugged sheer South African brilliance.
