Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge
Test your endurance in this scenic off-road running race through the Cape Winelands
There’s something to the idea of taking the trail less travelled, of venturing to new heights that few people would attempt to tackle, of climbing beyond the limits of the body and the mind. The Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge, which takes place on Sunday, 17 April 2016, is the ideal opportunity to do this while also immersing yourself in the scenery of some of the country’s most beautiful peaks.
This Stellenbosch race covers one of South Africa’s most picturesque trail running routes and offers both spectacular views and plenty of physical challenges for those craving an endorphin-induced rush. Participants will twist through dense forests, dart over rambling quartzite fortresses, breeze by wild waterfalls and skip through cool, crystal streams.
The Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge is one of three races that make up the Mountain Challenge Series (the other two are the Helderberg Mountain Challenge and the Marloth Mountain Challenge). Runners can compete for the best overall time across all three contests or they can simply choose one of the races to compete in. So, if you’re looking for excellent exercise and breathtaking vistas then don your running shoes and start training!
ROUTES FOR THE 2016 JONKERSHOEK MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE IN STELLENBOSCH
- 38km Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge (JMC)
This route takes runners east to the Swartboskloof trail then on to Diepgat, then to the Kurktrekker Saddle, which zigzags down the slopes of Guardian Peak. Participants will descend into the Jonkershoek Valley and on to Bergriviernek before heading back towards the track they started on. The whole journey involves some steep climbs, so you need to be fit to attempt it.
- 24km Jonkershoek Mountain Challenge Lite (JMC Lite)
A gradual climb takes runners along a forestry jeep track and after a few more kilometres, they will cross Witte Brug and turn onto the Panorama Hiking Trail. From here, participants tackle a steep 700m vertical climb to reach the high level contour path and then they move on to a fast mountain jeep track and head back towards the start. This route also involves sheer climbs and requires a certain level of fitness.
- 11km Jonkershoek Mountain Run (JMR)
This run follows a much shorter and (relatively) gentler route for those less inclined to…well… ascend those steep inclines and more keen on just having a bit of fun.
