Adam Lambert Concert in Cape Town
The ‘Whataya Want from Me’ hitmaker hits South Africa
‘Whataya Want from Me’ singer and American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert will play live in concert in Cape Town on Tuesday, 13 November 2012 at GrandWest as part of a larger South African tour.
Having moved on since wowing audiences with his technically skilled tenor voice on season eight of the hit American reality show, the 30-year old Grammy-nominated singer comes to South Africa for the first time to promote both his debut album 'For Your Entertainment' and his latest offering (May 2012) ‘Trespassing’, an album which features collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Bruno Mars and that debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Arguably, as well recognised for his sense of fashion (he was recently spotted at New York Fashion Week sporting a platinum blonde coiffeur), flamboyance and love of theatric performances as he is for his vocals, Lambert is, nonetheless, taking his act – and hair gel – on the road to show audiences that he’s more than just a pretty face.
The androgynous performer has had the chance to share the stage with the iconic band Queen three times, the most recent being at the MTV European Music Awards in November 2011. After performing at the Hammersmith Apollo in London and the Independence Square in Kiev, Ukraine, drummer and backing vocalist for the band, Roger Taylor, said that Lambert is "a really great performer with an astonishing voice;" other band members agreed that the late Freddie Mercury would “approve” of Lambert stepping in as front man.
Opening Act: Toya DeLazy
Opening for Lambert is local songstress, Toya DeLazy; an emerging Joburg-based hip hop-rock sensation who released her debut album, ‘Due Drop’, earlier this year. Receiving rave reviews for the EP, DeLazy – whose real name is Latoya Buthelezi (yes, she’s the granddaughter of IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi) – has been dominating the radio waves with her singles, ‘Pump It On’ and ‘Love is in the Air’.
It’s not for lack of hard work that the pop princess from KwaZulu-Natal has achieved success though. She’s been training for her musical career since the tender age of nine, when she started taking classical piano lessons, and in later years she studied jazz piano at Howard College in Durban.
