There’s just so much on offer. Baby friendly spaces in Cape Town for toddlers like The Playshed. Animal farms all over the province: see everything from penguins and alpacas to lions and crocodiles and exotic birds. Plus fun parks, water parks and even a fairy land in Swellendam.

TAKE THE KIDS TO THE TOP OF TABLE MOUNTAIN

The swift ride in the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway takes you 1 089m above Cape Town. The view is majestic, and you can easily spend hours up there.
Ages: All
What to expect: A 5-minute ride each way. An awe-inspiring 360 view of the city. The mountain is also home to an incredible diversity of endemic species. You can also shop and dine while up on Table Mountain.
Where: Upper Tafelberg Road, just off Kloof Nek Road
Opening hours: Operates every day of the year (weather permitting). During summer peak season from 8am (when the first car up goes), until 9.30pm (when last car goes down).

TAKE THEM TO A BIKE PARK 

Open to cyclists of all ages and skill levels, and with a variety of tracks totalling 2.8km, kids and adults can get their adrenaline fix at The Bike Park at Constantia Uitsig.

What to expect: Beginner jump lines, expert drop-offs, a suspension sky bridge (that tracks the canopy of the trees) and many more laps of fun.

SEE AFRICAN PENGUINS ON THE BEACH

Home to Africa’s only penguin colony, take a scenic drive to Simon’s Town and visit the sheltered Boulder’s Beach.

What to expect: Seeing African penguins in their natural habitat.

Opening hours: December to January, daily 7am to 7:30pm. February to March, daily 8am to 6:30pm. Opening hours change according to the season.

CRADLE SOME CROCS

Let the kids hold little crocodiles, visit the snake park or go fishing at Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm in Paarl.

What to expect: A scenic adventure to a crocodile farm with a fishing dam and a snake park too.

WALL-TO-WALL TRAMPOLINES

Home to the “largest foam pit in the world”, according to the owner, families can enjoy a day of trampolining, with snacks, coffee and free Wi-Fi on offer too at Rush Indoor Trampoline Park.

What to expect: 1700 square metres of interconnected wall-to-wall trampolines, two dodgeball courts, three basketball slam dunk lanes and a battle beam (a ledge on which two participants battle it out using beams over the foam pit).

View the stars and constellations at the state-of-the-art Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome.

What to expect: Lots of educational shows. Older kids learn about stargazing and local astronomy.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. The planetary dome shows take place at twice a day Tuesday to Friday, with three shows on the weekend.

PRACTICE YOUR MUSICAL SKILLS 

Let your kids unleash their inner rock star at one of the workshops and courses at the School of Rock.
Ages: 11 to 17.
What to expect: Music instruction, including lessons on harmonies, musicianship, stage performance and more.

A magical space in the winelands that is home to over 700 creatures from butterflies and birds to meerkats, there is so much to discover at the Butterfly World Animal Sanctuary.

Let the kids’ imaginations run wild by giving them canvases and a rainbow of colours to create their own artwork at Artjamming studios.

What to expect: A painting experience where kids can learn creative skills and express themselves in a care-free environment.

Paint masterpieces on unfired bisques (ready-made pottery pieces). Kids can run around in the garden and playground before filling up on snacks at the Clay Café.

THE AMAZING MAZE

Explore a 3-D maze at the Milkwood Maze at the historic and charming Imhoff Farm
Ages: Imhoff doesn’t specify an age, but as it is a maze, kids older than 5-years-old would best enjoy this activity.
What to expect: In the maze you get to learn about different countries and animals. Not your kid’s vibe? There’s lots more to do at Imhoff Farm.

GO FOR A SLED RIDE 

Take the sled ride of your life down a 1.2-km track at South Africa’s first tobogganing track at Cool Runnings.
Ages: 8 years and up can ride their own sled. Younger must ride with a guardian.
