Of course you’ve watched The Amazing Race, where teams race from checkpoint to checkpoint as they compete in a series of mental and physical challenges. But did you know you can play the game yourself at the Waterfront?
There's no danger, just thrills and comical confusion as you puzzle your way through locations and landmarks, and, yes, a race to the finish. The premium experiences even include real physical challenges like kayaking and cocktail mixing.
All of HintHunt’s amazing race experiences are based on the thrill and excitement of the popular TV series. Image: HintHunt Africa
The game starts at the HintHunt homebase in the Watershed, where teams get different colour bibs and choose a leader to man the phone. Make sure your phone has at least 50MB of data available, as the leader will use it to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint
Wear sunscreen and a hat, plus comfortable clothes and shoes because there will be some sprints, just as on the TV series (especially if you are competitive).
And you’ll need to make some strategic moves, as each checkpoint requires your team to search for clues and solve puzzles to speedily complete the challenge that moves you to the next location.
Races take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes to complete, depending on your team’s speed, which actually whizz by quite quickly.
Each team will need to have at least one smartphone. Image: HintHunt Africa
Street Arts, Wheely Wild, and Heritage Hustle are the three routes you can choose from.
In Street Arts, the first clue starts you off in the beautiful Watershed.
You’ll be dashing in and around the waterfront with locals and tourists adding to the fun, and linger at certain points to study nearby monuments and statues that hold the answer to your challenge.
Try to stay both alert and fast, as it’s easy to miss some of the clues, like the maps and signage.
You’ll play at TimeOut Market, Cape Wheel, Harbour House, and more iconic locations. Image: HintHunt Africa
Wheely Wild and Heritage Hustle are the longest races (they can last 75 minutes).
For Wheely Wild, teams explore the Waterfront’s marine life, as the clock ticks. You’ll come across seals and seabirds, and stop at the iconic Cape Wheel.
Heritage Hustle is all about unpuzzling the Waterfront’s past. Teams race through the V&A, passing historic landmarks and unraveling the stories they hold.
Just like in the TV series, there’s even a T-Junction question where teams have to choose which challenge to take on. Here, you’ll spend time in the Silo District, learning about South Africa’s history and famous figures.

There’s also Premium Lite, Premium and Premium Plus Amazing Races, where you can venture beyond the Waterfront and where the checkpoints have real physical challenges.
Premium Lite includes Art Jamming and kayaking or SUPing; Premium adds these activities plus a thrilling challenge on the iconic Cape Wheel.
And if you really want to go all out, try Premium Plus. It's cocktail mixing, beer pulling, a Cape Wheel trip, Art Jamming and kayaking or SUPing.

The Amazing Race is an exciting, fast-paced and interactive game that requires teamwork (it can accommodate up to 200+ players).
You’ll see families running towards their next checkpoint while friends deliberate over which route to take. Imagine the bragging rights you’ll earn with your friends at a birthday party or bachelors, or egging your colleagues on in a team building.
They can also modify routes, and shorten or extend the duration of the game, at an additional cost.
From small teams to large groups, HintHunt’s games foster camaraderie and a shared sense of achievement. Image: HintHunt Africa
