This hidden gem might look like Provence, with its rolling fields of pastel lavender under the backdrop of the mountains, but it’s actually around the corner from the city. Situated on a family farm dating back to 1682, Canettevallei Lavender and Wine Farm in the Stellenboschkloof valley has lavender picking experiences, wine tasting and lavender products.

PICK LAVENDER FOR R60

Every June to October, it’s lavender season. For R60, you’ll receive a pair of scissors and head out into the lavender fields and pick your own aromatic bunch. With affordable lavender picking and a great outdoor space, the farm is particularly popular with anyone who enjoys time outdoors.  

If you’re peckish after picking, head 1km down the road and you’ll find Jordan Wine Estate with various food and drink choices.

TASTE WINE FROM A 9TH GENERATION WINEMAKER

Besides owning the lavender farm, the de Waal family also owns a boutique winery, Super Single Vineyards. At Canettevallei you’ll find some of their exclusive wine range, Pella & Mount Sutherland Wines, where you can enjoy a tasting of five wines for R80 in their intimate tasting room, or sitting outside overlooking the lavender fields. The wines include a Sémillon, Chenin, Malbec, Shiraz And Cabernet.

FIND LAVENDER HONEY, PRESERVES + MORE 

There’s a shop on site which sells a range of lavender goodies. Their products range include lavender essential oil (with health benefits from sinusitis to acne), lavender honey, dry and fresh lavender in bunches, linens and floral cottons. 

You can also find unique lavender-based items such as strawberry & lavender preserve, lavender & lime cordial and their ‘Kaapse Moskonfyt’. You can also buy their own asparagus, picked every morning as well as various soaps. Their soaps consist of over 40 different scents, from charcoal and jasmine to aloe vera and hemp and lemongrass.
