7 Weekend Picks: Race Ducks Down a River and Dance in the Third Dimension

Plus leave the ordinary world behind at this burlesque show

This week is all about fun, creativity, imagination and out-of-this-world experiences. There’s a trance party with lazers, indoor pyro and 3D technology; a sexy circus mistress who’ll transport you into a world of wild imagination; and a punk-style singer-turned-author is in town to introduce his children’s books to us.

In the countryside, there are rubber ducks to race down a river (it’s all for a good cause), plus we have a taster for next week’s seven picks with giant bugs, PSL soccer and celebration of African culture.

This weekend, the Little Berg River will be overrun with them when their adoptive parents pop them on the river for a  race. The winning duck will earn one lucky parent a R5000 cash prize. You can dress as fashionably as you choose, just remember that gum boots are a must. You can also explore the historic little town after you’ve been to the Day at The Duck Race.

2. Let the Circus Mistress Take You On a Playful Burlesque Adventure
Friday, 13 September
Leave the normal world at the Galloway Theatre’s doors and take a trip into the world of burlesque, courtesy of the Kitty Kat Club’s Circus Mistress, Miss Kitty Kat. The show is full of mystery, playfulness and naughtiness in the form of a variety show and circus routines that include contemporary African dance, drag and a contortionist with a violin. Miss Kitty Kat closes the show with one of her signature sultry dances, and there’s much more for you to discover at Le Cabaret de Curiosites

3. Dance With 3D Glasses On For a One-Of-A-Kind Trance Experience
Saturday, 14 September
The Mercury Live presents a South African first: a trance party with laser shows, indoor pyrotechnics and 3D technology. Of course, There will also be 20 hard beat DJs hitting the decks, including Nick E Louder and Psycho Keaton at Fusion: The Third Dimension

4. Learn How To Get The Most Out of Indian Spices
Thursday, 12 September
Make your dinner parties stand out by applying some lessons from Ginger & Lime’s Indian cooking class. Learn to master Indian spices and make traditional dishes such as dahl, slow roast lamb and fish curry. You also get wine, but you can also BYOB to the Interactive India Cooking Course.

5. Andy Griffiths: From Rock Band to Best Selling Author
Saturday, 14 September
Before he became a best selling author of story books like the Just! Series and Treehouse series, Australian Andy Griffiths used to make ends meet as lead singer for experimental punk band Gothic Farmyard. He’s in Cape Town, and his band experience will form part of the funny stories he shares while promoting his latest book at two Exclusive Books stores as part of his Treehouse Tour.

6. Using Leftovers and Offcuts to Create Masterpieces
Wednesday - Sunday, 11-15 September
Artist Rodan Kane Hart created more than 50 sculptures and wall hangings using nothing but unused off-cuts and throw-away material from previous artworks. His latest exhibition will be on show at the Cavalli Wine Estate’s below ground level art gallery. It’s free to view Hart’s latest exhibition called Borderless.

7. REMINDER: Kinky Boots Extended To February 2020
Monday-Sunday, 9-15 September
If you haven’t yet seen Kinky Boots, now’s your chance to see the story about a cabaret-dancing drag queen and a reluctant shoe-shop owner who go into partnership to create a line of high-heeled boots. With music created by the iconic Cyndi Lauper, and production by the same Fugard Theatre dream team that re-created The Rocky Horror Picture Show and West Side Story, comes the smash hit Kinky Boots.


Creature Feature
A giant tarantula, six-metre long scorpion and other animatronic bugs are joined by dinosaurs at a nature reserve in Stellenbosch. There will also be real bugs, plus snakes and lizards, too, at the Big Bug Expo.

Celebrating Cape Town’s African Diversity
From Obz to Khayelitsha, people will be celebrating Cape Town’s unique African diversity with a multi-cultural mix of African food, music, poetry, art and fashion. This is a city-wide festival at various venues, and is called Afrofest
