Winter Specials at Rick's Café Américain
Cape Town specials to swoon even the staunchest penny-pincher
Rick’s Café Américain is a dream during summer. The sun-soaked rooftop garden and cosy streetside dining area present a playfully romantic atmosphere to enjoy a slow lunch or a round of cocktails at dusk. When the weather gets a little chilly the Moroccan-themed restaurant is transformed into a heated haven. The three open fireplaces, countless cushions and throws, as well as the outside heaters are put to full use to make patrons feel comfortable.
If swanky décor and Hollywood nostalgia – Rick’s Café pays homage to the classic 1940s film Casablanca – aren’t alluring enough, then perhaps the restaurant’s irresistible winter special, valid until September 1st, is a suitable draw card.
Between 3pm and 7pm daily diners can enjoy two glasses of Gluhwein and a pick between your choice of tapas or a vegetarian mezze platter (suitable for two), for R165. With olives, zucchini skewers, marinated feta, pickled mushrooms, chickpea salad, falafels, spiced carrot dip, tzatziki, hummus and pita bread, the vegetarian mezze platter sounds like a no-brainer. However, the Rick’s Café tapas menu is mouthwatering. Pair your mulled wine with a serving of Turkish lamb koftas (R78), smoked crocodile (R105), chicken livers (R59) or chili poppers (R56) to complete the special. So whether you’re looking for a bite to eat or something stiffer to take the edge off, the Moroccan-styled café has a deal that’s hard to resist.
This special runs during Ricks’ happy hour – we say hour but owner Per Menkö’s happy hour is really four hours – so if you’re feeling festive after a glass of Gluhwein there is the entire discounted cocktail menu to keep you going. Choose from a selection of classic cocktails and martinis, that cost R44 each, or take on a 1L pitcher of margaritas, mojitos or cosmopolitans, for R235, R195 and R235 respectively. Jack Black lager, pale ale and weiss are also available at different discounted prices, depending on the size you’d prefer.
It would be a travesty to not take advantage of this warming winter special. We suggest you round up all the usual suspects and head down to this local eatery and watering hole for some good food, great drinks and glorious conversation!
