It’s the weekend of festivals and markets (all over the Western Cape). Shuck oysters in Knysna this Friday, pop by an unconventional market in Hout Street this Saturday or head down to Plettenberg Bay for an Ocean Festival this Sunday. Here are 7 (and more) things to do this weekend.
JOIN A 10-DAY FIESTA IN KNYSNA
Families, foodies, sport lovers and adventurers, head down to the Garden Route for the Knysna Oyster Festival. There’ll be wine and gin tastings, cycle tours, trail runs, a vintage market and loads more to do. Plus, you can join the Oyster Hunt (visit as many locations as you can on the digital map) to enter a lucky draw to win daily prizes.

STOP BY THIS ALTERNATIVE MARKET IN THE CITY
A collaboration between Thrift Fest and Open Sesame Bar brings a market with a difference to the city centre (no, it’s not a thrift market). There’ll be super cool, trendy vendors at this vibey market in Hout Street (think tattoo artists, nail techs, designers and other artisans).

WOMEN, LEARN SELF-DEFENCE ON THURSDAY
Rio Grappling Club is collaborating with Futurama in a self-defense evening for women with professional Jiu-Jitsu instructor, Eduan Van Graan. The evening will focus on self-defence techniques, using Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and demonstrating how non-lethal weapons can be used to avoid close-quarter scenarios altogether, so women can learn to protect themselves.

CELEBRATE MARINE LIFE AT THIS FESTIVAL
Calling all the ocean lovers – the Plett Ocean Festival will offer a variety of fun activities, including rocky shore excursions, guided hikes, scuba diving and snorkelling, a trail run and a team surfing competition. Plus, you can join the Marine Science Symposium from 1 - 3 July.

SPEND SUNDAY AT AN INDOOR MARKET
Support locals at the I Love Local Market, which takes place at the Sunningdale Sports Complex. You’ll find fresh produce, winter items, products for your furry friends, decor and other locally made products. It’s the perfect thing to do on a lazy Sunday morning.

WATCH DOCUMENTARY FILMS AT THIS FESTIVAL
Grab your popcorn and join the 24th Encounters South African International Documentary Festival. It's the number one documentary festival in Africa and will be showcased at the Labia Theatre. The 10-day multiplatform event will feature the best African and international documentaries.

VISIT THIS WINTER NIGHT MARKET
Shake off the winter blues and head to the Century City Night Market, held at Intaka Island. There’s live music, a thrifting corner, and everything from tacos, empanadas, and boa buns to samosas, Cape Malay curry and other hearty food. This market is a must-visit if you want to try different types of cuisines.

PLAY AT A WINTER WONDERLAND
Make the most of winter at Snow World at Waterworld Strand. This snow park offers combinations of snow and ice activities for all ages, from ice slides, a snow play area, snow ramps and there are even animals from the Ice Age. Note: Dress for snow. It will get chilly.

CHECK OUT THIS WINTER ART EXHIBITION
The Cape Gallery presents its annual Winter Solstice Exhibition this June and July. It’s a group project, with art illustrating the changing of seasons in Cape Town. The various artists featured have drawn inspiration from the Cape storms, fog and hibernation.

HIKE TO A MYSTICAL WATERFALL
Unwind by hiking to a waterfall in Cecilia Forest. There are many routes to get there: Cecilia car park, Newlands Forest, Constantia Nek and Kirstenbosch Gardens. The routes differ in duration and difficulty, but all lead to the breathtaking water gushing over hanging ferns and green mosses. All the routes are pet friendly and most of them are free!
