The Marriage of Figaro Opera at the Artscape Theatre
Watch the magic of Mozart’s compositions come to life in this comic opera filled with mayhem
Classical music enthusiasts can rejoice at the arrival of this manic, mischievous comic opera landing on Mother City shores. The Marriage of Figaro is set to blow audiences away at the Artscape Theatre from Saturday, 18 to Sunday, 26 October 2014.
The opera, which is a sequel to the famed The Barber of Seville, is known for being one of Mozart’s most well-known compositions and is based on an 18th century stage comedy. The performance picks up where The Barber of Seville left off, with Figaro the barber witnessing the marriage between the Count and Rosina. The story then follows the life of Figaro, who is intending to betroth his beloved. However, the tale doesn’t end there, as the Count, who becomes estranged from his partner due to his philandering ways, lays a claim to Figaro’s beloved future wife. Figaro, the humble servant, is quick to outwit and outsmart his master’s cruel intentions and the rest is a roaring ride for eager audiences.
The comic offering will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, which will be led by renowned director Christine Crouse, who has been involved extensively with South African opera productions. The cast features South African soprano and recent Juilliard graduate Golda Schultz, who has travelled the world displaying her vocal talents, and Cape Town-born George Stevens, who plays Figaro and is currently based in Germany pursuing his career.
Follow this tale of passion, infidelity, forgiveness and have many laughs along the way. This play is a must-see for fans of Mozart’s compositions and comedic opera.
