Return of the Ancestors at the Artscape Theatre
This brilliant piece of local satire looks back at South Africa’s past and forward at its future
Have a laugh and watch this tongue-in-cheek piece on the changes occurring in post-apartheid South Africa at the Artscape Theatre from Thursday, 6 to Saturday, 15 November 2014.
Written by award-winning local playwright Mike van Graan, Return of the Ancestors is a proudly South African play that pays homage to the classic theatre piece Woza Albert, in which Jesus returns to South Africa to witness the injustice of apartheid. In Return of the Ancestors, the ancestors send deceased struggle heroes Steve Biko and Neil Aggett back to Earth to see the new, modern South Africa and to report back on their findings as part of a quest to discover if sacrifices made during apartheid were worth it.
The play features a South African cast directed by Mdu Kweyama, with the talented duo of Mandisi Sindo and Siya Sikawuti playing Steve Biko and Neil Aggett, respectively. Return of the Ancestors has enjoyed a successful run at the 2014 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.
So be prepared for some laughs at this brilliant local portrayal of the new South Africa.
