In The Dark: Tave(r)ner
Bask in the mesmerising sounds of music from the Renaissance and Modern periods at this concert set in complete darkness
Experience the haunting vocals of The Vox Ensemble in total darkness at the Youngblood Art Gallery for their ‘In the Dark’ showcase. The works of John Tavener and John Taverner will be performed on Wednesday, 17 August 2016 to celebrate the periods of Renaissance and Modern music.
Biblioteek Productions invites you to witness a demonstration of music by John Tavener and John Taverner, two English composers from vastly different periods. Tavener was a religious composer of the Modern era who was named one of the best composers of his time and was particularly recognised for Song for Athene, which was performed at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997. On the other hand, Taverner (with an ‘r’) was a respected composer during the Renaissance era (14th – 17th Century). This showcase will demonstrate the differences between the two eras, using a darkened venue to ensure that the audience’s focus is directed entirely on the music.
The choral concert will be performed by The Vox Ensemble, an a cappella group based in Cardiff, Wales. The ensemble will be directed by John Woodland, who is currently the Musical Director for the UCT Choir and a presenter on Fine Music Radio 101.3.
Tave(r)ner forms part of Youngblood Art Gallery’s ‘In The Dark’ series, which is a range of performances of music from the Renaissance and Modern periods done in complete darkness. Youngblood Art Gallery forms part of the Youngblood Foundation, which gives South African artists a platform on which to nurture their talent until they are ready to work independently.
