A Spartacus of Africa Ballet at Artscape
The Roman tale of a slave gladiator takes on an African twist in this ballet
The touching tale of Spartacus, the slave and gladiator who led a major uprising against the Roman Empire, is readapted and relocated in Africa in this performance. The ballet is already showing at the Artscape Opera House, and will run until Sunday, 12 July 2015 so best you book soon.
The dramatic dance follows one man’s battle against the humiliation and cruelty of slavery, as he revolts against the masters in an attempt to free himself and the men and women who follow him.
The ballet is performed by a cast of talented international and local dancers, taking turns to play the two lead characters, Spartacus and Phyrgia. The ballet is accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s renditions of Aram Khachaturian’s 1954 music.
The show features international guest artists Brooklyn Mack and Andile Ndlovu from The Washington Ballet, and Lara Turk from The Royal Ballet, as well as over 100 South African performers.
Ndlovu, originally from Johannesburg, has performed with The Washington Ballet for six seasons. He danced with Cape Town City Ballet at the 2008 South African International Ballet Competition, where he tied for first place.
Lara Turk was born in Durban and is now a First Artist of The Royal Ballet. She began performing with them in 2007, after a stint with Cape Town City Ballet where she was named the Best Newcomer and Outstanding Female Performer by the Cape Town Balletomane Society.
The enthusiastic cast features a wealth of talent and is presented by the South African National Dance Trust. If you prefer singing to dancing, then perhaps a night enjoying some of Barbra Streisand’s best songs will be a better option for you.
