Surprise your team with these fun team-building activities
Last update: 13 July 2022
Now that Covid restrictions are eased, there’s no need to play virtual games to keep your colleague’s spirits up. Close your laptops and explore unique ways to keep up the momentum at work with thrilling escape-room adventures, wine tasting with a twist and unique art experiences.
SING WITH A LOCAL MUSIC STAR
If there’s a man that can get your teammates expressing themselves loudly and having fun while they do it, it will be Dirty Skirts lead singer Jeremy de Tolly. The singer has travelled down the path of self-healing and sees the voice as a central part of this process. Working with him will show you how to “express yourself with ease, confidence and freedom” – can you imagine the benefits of that in a team, giving presentations or even socially? Plus you might discover you – or a teammate – have a singing voice to die for.
What you get out of it: A fun and dynamic experience that will leave each team member more confident in expressing themselves. You’re also sure to feel more confident speaking in public.
Note: This experience is shared, but if you want more access to freeing your voice, there are private sessions available, too.
BOOST YOUR TEAM WITH A SCOOTOURS RACE
Nothing like competition to get colleagues vibing. Consider Scootours, then, where you freewheel down a purpose-built track on Swiss-designed Monster Mountain Scooters at Middelvlei Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. It’s a 45-minute, action-packed Flow Trail, 850 metres long and is a complete adrenaline rush complete with berms, rollers and a bush tunnel. There’s also a 1.5 hour Scootours mid-week special. Both options include a guide, equipment and a complimentary glass of wine. Plus, you can work from the farm, eat a lekker boerebraai lunch, and add an archery session to your teambuilding session.
What do you get out of it: Shared experiences strengthen relationships between team members, and if you’re not a talker – well, keep riding.
Note: Scootours’ also does team-building experiences on Table Mountain or in Franschhoek

GATHER THE TROOPS TO SOLVE A CHALLENGE
Get your crew working together towards a common goal with HintHunt’s escape games. They can be outdoors (although you can still play online), as a Cape Town-based Amazing Race or in the original escape rooms at the V&A Waterfront. All the games are exhilarating. Your team will need to rely on everyone to survive (or win). The stakes are high but the rewards are worth every riddle and puzzle solved at HintHunt.
What you get out of it: The pure satisfaction of beating the opposing team, with a team victory photo at the end. HintHunt is located in the Watershed at the V&A Waterfront. If you’ve beaten the game or not you can take the team for a post-escape game room lunch or drinks.

SEGWAY VINEYARD TOURS
What’s awesome about the Segway is that they move intuitively with your body, which you’ll learn to do in a 30-minute lesson. Then you can start to improve your skill. There’s the whole of Spier to explore once you’ve mastered this nifty little electric two-wheeler. The best team-building activity is the more challenging Segway Soccer option, involving an obstacle course with cones, figure eights, zig-zagging and ending with a soccer “shoot-out”. And afterwards, there are the green lawns of Spier to spread out on for a picnic and some wine, where you can mull over your scores on Segway Tours.
What you get out of it: A new skill, the feeling of gliding effortlessly at speed without raising a sweat, plus proximity to picnics and wine?
Note: The outfit can accommodate 15 to 18 guests per tour, and there are four to five guests per guide. Bigger group? They can train you together and split you for the rides.

IT’S TIME FOR COCKTAILS AND CANVAS
Live your best Picasso life and book your team for a fun group-art session that requires only enthusiasm and openness to trying something new. On arrival, you’ll receive a painting pack of a standard 40x 50cm canvas, brushes, easel, Acrylic paint and aprons, and a welcome cocktail. Guided by a professional art instructor, group painting sessions are led to recreate the featured painting, which you can take home or hang up in the office. Make a day (or night) of enjoying cocktails and exploring your artistic side at Cocktails and Canvas.
What you get out of it: A relaxed day or evening with colleagues while making art to take home or to the office; food and other selections of drinks are available for sale.
Note: Group bookings of up to 20 people or more per session.

HOW ABOUT WINE TASTING ON AN E-BIKE?
Cycle on an electric bicycle to wine farms in Banhoek, Franschhoek or one in Stellenbosch that dates back to 1692. Your guide will go through these scenic routes at a leisurely pace, spending 30 to 45 minutes at each wine farm so there’s time to savour the wine and do some shopping. Plus, you can ride through a forest on an e-fatbike while taking in alpine views (and a hot coffee once you reach the highest point) with Vine Bikes.
What you get out of it: You’re always bound to have a good time when you combine wine tastings and the fun of cycling on an e-bike.
Note: You don’t have to spend too much energy, as your e-bike assists you in pedalling.
