New Era For Stellenbosch FC Now That They Have New Owners
Meet the Mother City's oldest football club – now with a brand new name!
Last Update: 30 August 2018
It’s the beginning of an exciting era for National First Division outfit, Stellenbosch FC, who have new owners: Remgro Limited, together with the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport.
Remgro’s wealthy chairman, Johann Rupert had previously thrown lots of money into rugby, but changed tack to include the round-ball game, where his social investment strategy is set to impact the lives of youngsters in the Winelands areas.
While Brazilian Futsal specialist Jose Cabral is responsible for development, Steve Barker remains head coach of the professionals and has snapped up tricky wingers, Mickyle Jackson and Lelethu Skelem, as well as ex-Bidvest Wits striker, Abednego Mosiatlhaga.
Last season in the National First Division, “Stellies” were 29 points off the pace in the second tier, relying heavily on Iqraam Rayners’ late 10-goal haul to finish mid-table, but are obviously hoping to do much better, especially at away fixtures.
Furthermore, the club’s expecting to woo a huge fan base at the Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium – wearing their maroon and gold kit. Away colours are white with maroon and gold.
