Who Will Get The Treasure: Orlando Pirates Or Stellenbosch FC?

These two soccer teams are evenly matched as they go head-to-head in Athlone this month

On 26 October, Stellenbosch FC is hosting Soweto giants Orlando Pirates at Athlone Stadium, in Athlone, at 3pm sharp. Can the Pirates redeem themselves after their Bidvest Wits defeat on 21 September? Or can struggling Stellenbosch FC pull a surprise victory?


ORLANDO PIRATES' FORM IS BETTER
On paper, of the two teams Orlando Pirates is in better form, having an overall ranking six places higher than Stellenbosch FC. They currently stand at eighth on the PSL 2019-20 ranking list, having achieved three draws, one loss and one win in its last five games. A recent 4-3 loss to Bidvest Wits might have shaken the players’ confidence, but they regained some equilibrium with a 3-3 score against the PSL’s other Cape team, Cape Town City. Hopefully, that's enough to encourage them to bring their A-game on the 26th.


The team will most likely have the lion’s share of support owing to its massive fan base in the Mother City, although Kaizer Chiefs fans might change that by showing up to this game as Pirates fans, similar to what Pirates fans did when the Amakhosi played Cape Town City at Newlands Stadium.


WORTH KNOWING ABOUT STELLENBOSCH FC'S FORM
This home team from Stellenbosch are 14th on the PSL log, with two draws, two losses and a 2-0 win against Polokwane City (its most recent game) in its last five games. Despite also losing to Bidvest Wits, the team managed a tighter game than Pirates did, losing 2-1. The win against Polokwane City might prove a morale booster, along with the homeground advantage and Pirates’ equally rickety form.


WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
Given the form of the two teams, as well as their stats from recent games, this game will be evenly matched. Both teams recently lost to Bidvest Wits and drew with Golden Arrows. Although Orlando Pirates has recently shown a loss of stride, its huge fanbase in Cape Town could prove tantamount to its success. On the other hand, Stellenbosch has had a very recent win and didn’t need to travel as far as Pirates, so that could give the team an advantage.
