It's finally time to say good riddance 2020, and hello 2021. Some events have been cancelled due to level 3 regulations (see which below). In their place are some awesome ones options that truly reflect the spirit of New Year's Eve 2020/2021.
Years from now when people ask, “Remember lockdown NYE 2020?” You want to answer, “I was there at the most special New Year’s Eve party ever.” On 31 December 2020 into 1 January 2021, 14 of South Africa’s best house DJs and super star international guests will play 7 hours of the ultimate audio visual interactive house party, which you can live stream from your home.

Traditionally over 200 000 gather at the V&A Waterfront to watch fireworks at midnight. 2020 is no ordinary year, so the V&A has reimagined 31 December and they have done it with aplomb. At the stroke of midnight the harbour precinct will shine a giant beam of light that will be seen by everyone throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs. Read all about Cape Town’s giant beam of light in the V&A Waterfront. Price: Free
When: 31 December 2020 (midnight till 1am) and every night until 6 January 2021 (9pm to 10pm) 6 January last evening.

Few experiences say “new beginnings” more than riding the cableway up the iconic Table Mountain. It’s open New Year’s Day (and all public holidays). It’s super popular over summer, so to avoid disappointment, book online. It’s efficient and convenient to buy online; there’s a calendar, where you can see which days are sold out and which are available (don’t come on the day without a ticket). Good news is the cableway runs on extended hours in peak season. From 16 December 2020 until 15 January 2021 it operates from 8am (first car up) to 9.30pm (last car down).
Price: From R100 to R380.
When: Operates every day of the year (weather permitting). From 8am when the first car up goes, until 9.30pm, when the last car goes down. To pick the right time day and time and book early.
Where: Upper Tafelberg Road, just off Kloof Nek Road
Folk Café is a chilled spot right along Muizenberg beach. They had a Christmas lunch menu of gammon pizza, pork belly, roasted eggplant and pan-fried kingklip, as well as mince pies. Now you can eat off their regular menu before they close at 8pm.
When: 31 December, closes at 8pm

The Theatre on The Bay, with its ocean views and iconic giant golden drapes, is hosting Cape Town comedian Alan Committie this New Year’s Eve, and Committie is holding nothing back. He's ripping 2020 a new one with his latest jokes touching on earthquakes, the cigarette and alcohol bans, Tik-Toks, our leaders and, of course, the global lockdown. There’ll also be a bar full of drinks (and coffee, if you prefer), with a snack menu.
Price: You can book your laughs online via tickets.computicket.com
When: 31 December, 8pm - 10:15pm
Where: The Theatre on The Bay
