2 vibes on 2 floors, with DJs, shisha, big screens, and beer
Last updated: Thursday, 31 August 2023
“There’s something for everybody,” says Café Extrablatt’s owner Guido Dierschke. There’s no question about that – it has a sports bar, a shisha lounge and numerous dining spaces, plus the food is affordable, delicious and every single day of the week there are amazing specials (think burgers, pizzas and 3-hour happy hours).

The menu has everything from pasta, grills and soups to German dishes, such as schweinshaxe mit sauerkraut und bratkartoffeln, a plate filled with roasted pork hock, fried potato with onion and bacon, and imported fermented cabbage relish.
Other popular dishes include the roulade (German rolled beef), currywurst (traditional sausage seasoned with a curry sauce), and köningsberger klopse (meatballs in a creamy white sauce with capers).
Pizzas are on special every single Monday. Image: Café Extrablatt
Café Extrablatt has a range of weekly specials to choose from. Pop by for Monday Madness and take advantage of the pizza special from 5pm to midnight. And how’s this for a good deal: On Wacky Wednesdays order two burgers and the cheaper one will be free.
On Saturday and Sunday, you and your crew can dig into the extensive breakfast and brunch buffets that include everything from cereals and pastries to meats, cheeses, salads, omelettes and even fresh warm waffles.

Thinking ahead? What better way to recover from New Year’s Eve parties than to start New Year’s Day with a wholesome buffet. The breakfast/brunch buffet is available on Christmas Day and all other public holidays (9am to 12pm on Saturdays and 9am to 2pm on Sundays). They even do Christmas Lunch.

Then there’s Happy Hour, which lasts three hours every week night (5pm to 8pm, Monday to Friday), which makes it a great, and affordable, spot for a regular after-work hangout with friends or colleagues. Choose between fruity, Caribbean, creamy or classic cocktails and mocktails (there’s an excellent wine list and craft beer selection, too).

After dinner or drinks, keep the good vibes going and head to the shisha lounge on the top floor (the smoking area). There’s a bar and balcony with hookah pipes for rent, with tobacco flavours including watermelon, mint cream, cherry and more. There’s also a cigarette machine.

Did we mention the big screens for watching sports? It’s a vibey venue that shows any big sporting events on huge screens, with a preference for soccer, but rugby is also screened on the four TV screens on both levels of the café. It’s also one of the only places in Cape Town where you can watch the Fußball Spiele of the German football league, the Bundesliga.
There’s four TVs on each floor, so you’ll have a good view of the game from anywhere you sit. Image: Café Extrablatt
At the back of the café is the colourful kids’ corner, with a punchy superhero mural. Budding Picasso’s can grab some chalk and decorate the blackboard, or play with the available toys or read books.
Blackboards are placed by the tables, so kids can draw while parents eat. Image: Café Extrablatt
Café Extrablatt is open: Sunday to Thursday, 9am - 1am; Friday to Saturday, 9am - 2am
