CELEBRATE HERITAGE DAY

The 24th of September is not only a day to gather around a braai with friends and family, it’s also a day to celebrate the diversity of South African culture and heritage. We’ve rounded up 8 ways for you and the family to commemorate this day. Dance to Swing music and township jazz, join get out your running shoes for a fun run, become a potjie master and 4 more things to do this Heritage Day.

SEE THE CANOLA FLOWERS

It’s time for the Festival of Yellow, which celebrates the blooming fields of gold that cover the Western Cape every Spring. Road trip to Overberg, Darling or Philadelphia to see the canola fields, plus discover 7 things you didn’t know about canola fields. And don’t miss this epic giveaway from B-well Foods, “the canola company on a mission to help you live healthier”. The competition closes on 25 September

WATCH A MOVIE OUTDOORS EVERY THURSDAY

Did you know that every Thursday We Café in Gardens (across from Power & Glory) has  an outdoor cinema experience? You can watch movies like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Truman Show and loads of other classics. Bring your own blanket, pillows and even pets, and snack on the set menu from the café (plant-based foods).

VISIT CHINA FOR A DAY, EAT THE FOOD  

Travelling to places via their food is an excellent way to experience another culture. This weekend you can eat authentic Chinese fare – such as Gua Bao and Peking Duck – at the Chinese Food Fair on 25 September. It’s on at the Chinese Community Centre in Observatory, and here you’ll also be able to watch a dragon dance.

JOIN AN OUTDOOR-DINING EXPERIENCE 

Make your way to Regent Road this Saturday for a street-dining festival. There will be live local music on 2 stages (on either end of the street), a kiddies’ play area and the Street Art Extravaganza, where you can watch talented artists paint murals and portraits. Plus, some of your favourite restaurants, galleries, hotels, and stores will spill out onto the street. It’s pet-friendly, too. Regent Road will be closed from Church Road to Solomons Road.

GET INTO THE SPRING SPIRIT

Bring your picnic blanket and dance under the Huguenot Monument. Spoegwolf, a well-known Afrikaans band, is hosting an epic spring festival in Franschhoek, featuring other major names such as Valiant Swart, Early B and Koos Kombuis. Food and wine will be available and there’ll be beer stalls on site, but you can bring your own picnic basket too (no outside drinks are allowed).

ROCK ‘N ROLL ON SATURDAY

Rock out with Face Jackson, a multi-genre band, at Armchair Theatre this Saturday. Listen to  reggae, funk, hip-hop and rock, all of this is just a teaser for the band’s EP release party. There is also a R1 200 voucher from Grandfunk RetroVintage, a limited edition EP release T-shirt and 2 tickets to the EP Release party up for grabs. After the party, chill outside at the firepit or upstairs with views on the bustling street of Lower Main Road.

TOUR 14 HISTORIC AREAS ON FOOT EVERY SUNDAY

From Loop Street to Simonstown, discover the rich history of Cape Town on foot. Cameron Peters, aspiring filmmaker and founder of Cape Town Heritage Tours, hosts 2-hour long walking tours every Sunday that run as a circuit across the peninsula, covering 14 areas. Book as a group or a private tour and learn about the rich history of Cape Town and its surroundings.

COMPETE IN A QUIZ NIGHT EVERY MONDAY

Put your thinking caps on, gather your friends and  family and put your knowledge to the test in music, sport and the world around us. Furley’s Bar and Grill puts on a quiz night, hosted by Andile Majola (aka The Inquizitorious Rex) every Monday. There are prizes up for grabs for winning teams (max 8 people). Plus, pop in earlier for a happy-hour special from 5 - 6pm and a hearty meal.

This Sunday market at Goedeverwachting has something for the whole family: Thrifting, arts, crafts and food and drinks on sale. LEARN HOW TO DO ORIGAMI 

Every weekend you can join in a live art experience at Art Haus Gallery. Artist Juanne-Pierre De Abreu (JooJ), the Guinness World Record holder of the largest display of origami butterflies, will teach you the ancient Japanese art of origami as he creates his new exhibition, “Reimagining the Greats”. Pop by and watch or book a slot and take part in the experience. Your butterfly may just form part of a beautifully finished artwork

VISIT A FLEA MARKET THIS SUNDAY 

The Muizenberg Flea Market has been in existence for the last 34 years. It has over 300 stalls that sell everything from Cape Malay food and mielies in a cup to underwear and brass decor. And best part of all, you always leave with a bargain when you visit this Sunday market.

HIKE TO A MYSTICAL WATERFALL

Unwind by hiking to a waterfall in Cecilia Forest. There are many routes to get there: Cecilia car park, Newlands Forest, Constantia Nek and Kirstenbosch Gardens. The routes differ in duration and difficulty, but all lead to the breathtaking water gushing over hanging ferns and green mosses. All the routes are pet friendly and most of them are free! The Long March to Freedom exhibition in Century City is the largest exhibition of its kind anywhere in the world. It’s a sculpture garden of 100 life-sized, bronze statues that depict South African and international liberation and human-rights icons, and tells the story of South Africa’s 350-year struggle for freedom and democracy.
