A look at the eateries in the Mother City with some of the best self-service spreads!

Last Update: 4 December 2017

The Mother City has no shortage of delectable dining experiences, self-service spreads included! So, in the spirit of giving you the lowdown on lekker local hotspots that are wallet and portion-friendly, we’ve scoured the city for the ‘best of the buffet’. Whether you’re in search of a hot and spicy Indian curry, a seafood selection, a healthy breakfast smorgasbord or an out-of-this-world African dining experience, we’ve got something for you!

BUFFET RESTAURANTS IN CAPE TOWN

Tobago’s Restaurant at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Cape Town
With an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean – and Robben Island visible from the terrace – Tobago’s takes advantage of their location by hosting some of the best buffets in the city. Apart from Radisson Blu’s flagship restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets to its guests and day visitors, the eatery hosts Friday Night Braai to kick off the weekend, and Seafood Grill every Saturday, and the more traditional Sunday Lunch Buffet to end it all off. The three-course buffets are real belly busters and perfect for anyone with a hearty appetite.

Start your weekend off with barbequed meat (done the South African way), Saturdays are reserved for a spread of the freshest catches from the ocean, which also happens to be a mere pebble plop away from your table, while you can expect classic favourites like a carvery selection and Yorkshire pudding as part of the Sunday feast.

Both Friday and Saturday night’s buffets cost R425/p while the Sunday Lunch Buffet is R395/p. Be sure to book a table to avoid disappointment.

Buffet Hours: Friday and Saturday: 6:30pm - 10:30pm. Sunday: 12:30pm - 3:30pm

Café Extrablatt
This international eatery in Green Point, offers a cosmopolitan all-you-can-eat buffet breakfast and brunch buffet on the weekend. Expect anything and everything, from fruit salad, muesli and yogurt, to an array of cereals and breads, including freshly baked croissants breadsticks and pretzels. A selection of cheese is on offer too, from sliced cheddar to blue cheese, goats milk cheese and everything in between. Add some cold meats and salad, and breakfast favourites like Russians, baked beans, and bacon and eggs made exactly how you like them. Grab an omelette at the omelette station, where Chef Calvin will greet you with a friendly smile and cook up a storm with blazing flames and theatrics to make your day. And just when you think you’re all filled up, Chef Calvin introduces you to his famous flapjacks, served with maple syrup and strawberries. Keep an eye out for the dessert options, which changes regularly. These include muffins and breakfast cheesecake slices!

Booking for Café Extrablatt’s buffet breakfast and brunch is essential. Buffet breakfast takes place every Saturday from 8am to 12pm and cost R112.90 per person. There is also a buffet brunch takes place Sundays and public holidays from 9am to 2pm and cost R132.90 per person, this includes a lunch option too - these dishes change regularly, but patrons can expect spaghetti bolognaise, pasta, cottage pie and much more.

The President Hotel
Dine in style at this elegant four-star haunt, which presents a classic Sunday lunch. You’ll receive a warm welcome from the friendly staff who’ll help you settle in before introducing you to the delectable spread on the buffet tables. For starters, there’s hot soup and freshly baked rolls, along with a bevy of salads. These include a blue cheese and pear salad, a crab salad, a Waldorf salad and so much more. This is followed by the main course, which is a variety of roast chicken, sirloin, seafood ragout and all the trimmings: veggies, basmati rice, baby potatoes – delicious! After a comforting main, you can end off with a sweet treat like lemon tart, chocolate mousse or a classic bread and butter pudding. A word of caution: it’s easy to get over-enthusiastic with the portions when you’re helping yourself to the delicious-looking dishes. Start slow or you might not have room for dessert! This venue is perfect to nestle in no matter what the weather, and you can take in the breathtaking ocean views from your table. You’ll be sure to want to make lunching here on weekends a tradition with friends, partners and family.

Please do note that booking is essential should you want to enjoy a Sunday lunch feast. You can do this by sending an email through to events@presidenthotel.co.za. The cost is R199p/p; however, children under 10 eat for free!

Diners who don’t feel like indulging in the full spread can opt to order off the restaurant’s a la carte menu, and prepare for portions as generous as the buffet table. If you feel like walking off your satisfying meal, you could follow up the buffet with a leisurely walk around the lodge or take in the sites during a game drive within the lodge.

Thali Thali releases the Sunday Buffet menu every Monday on its Facebook page. The price ranges between R140p/p to R160p/p (children can eat for half price) depending on the weekly menu.

And if all this isn’t quite enough, you can delight in the occasional live music act and moderate pricing. Kids are more than welcome, and there’s an expansive lawn, small stream and a jungle gym to keep them entertained.

Guests can soak up the scenic views from the poolside or in the beautifully appointed restaurant decorated in chandeliers and white tablecloths. Curry? No. Sushi? No. Pasta? Can’t decide what you feel like for lunch or dinner? You can have a bit of everything at The Village Buffet, where there is a huge selection of starters and main meals. However, you can also find satisfying salads; pasta and noodle dishes; plenty of seafood, from sushi to classic fish and chips; pizza; and more. To end things off, there’s a small but divine assortment of desserts, including the heavenly chocolate fountain (my mouth is watering thinking about it!).

The weekday buffet costs R160p/p whilst the weekend buffet costs R180/p. Children under the age of 10 can eat on any given day for R99 and can enjoy bottomless soft drinks and desserts (watch out, parents!). There is no charge for Under 3s.
