A Food Truck of Flame-Grilled Ribs, Dessert Bars and Bakeries, Mexican and Middle Eastern Fare – And All Halaal / Halal

There are over 14 different dishes worth trying out at these halaal and halaal-friendly restaurants

At these halaal and halaal-friendly restaurants you’ll spot a dish that screams “try me”. The owners have also told us about the dishes that people most order – their crowd favourite. So, there’s a bounty of foods to find. Syriana in Sea Point serves the kunafa, a decadent and syrupy doggy dish. Go to Saray to try their et sote, a beef stew dish cooked in Turkish spices. There are also some new restaurants, like Flamed-Grilled Burger, the Rack and Rib Food Truck, and old favourites.

HOT BUNS
On Loop Street, you’ll find Flamed Burger, a burger joint with a twist. Sourcing only the best halaal meat, they incorporate Arabic flavours to bring you unique, tasty burgers. They aim to bring you scrumptious food in an unforgettable way.
Crowd favourite: The Son of a Bun burger is the house speciality and is a classic beef burger with a fried egg, cheese, caramelised onion and giant grilled mushroom.
Most unique: Rings of Fire Burger – beef patty covered in flaming hot sauce, red pesto cheese, jalapenos and caramelised onions.

MIX OF MEXICAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN
2Kitchens in Woodstock serves both Middle Eastern and Mexican flare. On the Mexican side, your choices include crowd-favourites such as quesadillas, chilli poppers and nachos. If you’re leaning more towards Middle Eastern, try the falafel pita or schwarma. You’ll find 2Kitchens at the Earth Fair market at St George’s Mall and the Natural Good Market in Century City. They’ve also been part of the  Galileo Open Air Cinema since day one.
Crowd favourite: 2Kitchens are proud of their nachos, which are available with beef, chicken or veg. Cheese is melted with a blowtorch for a smokey taste.
Dish to try: The falafel laffah is a vegan meal packed with flavour

RIBS GALORE
The Rack 'n Grill food truck sells sticky beef ribs and a selection of pure hand-pressed beef burgers. Go with an appetite and tuck into the Hunger Buster (a double patty, triple cheese with caramelised onions and cheese). The food truck trades every Friday evening in Rylands 5–7pm. You’ll also spot them at various pop-up markets and music events.
Crowd favourite: Flame-grilled ribs. These babies are hand rubbed with spice, slow cooked and flamed grilled in a sweet and sticky BBQ basting
Dish to try: The Smash Burger – a single patty, double cheese, grilled mushrooms, mushroom sauce, caramelized onions and topped with chilli relish. Definitely cannot get this burger anywhere else.

TURKISH DELIGHTS
Saray, which means “palace” in Turkish, is the Turkish-Kurdish restaurant that offers a fine dining experience. This fully halaal restaurant takes customers on a journey through Turkish-Kurdish culture. The Turkish coffee served with the tasty delight is a must-try. Saray is moving from the city centre to trendy De Waterkant this July.
Crowd favourite: The mixed grill is a flame-grilled selection of meat served with bread, rice and chips.
Dish to try: Et sote is a meat dish cooked in traditional Turkish spices served with seasonal vegetables and a traditional Turkish flatbread.

This family-run business is dedicated to sharing meals they love with their community, with quality meat and poultry from their own butchery. HALAAL CERTIFICATION
*While certification from one of the four authoritative bodies in South Africa – the MJCHT, ICSA, NIHT  and SANHA – guarantees, beyond a doubt, that an eatery conforms with Islamic standards, there are also many restaurants that may not be officially certified, but that still claim to be halaal. These eateries are exclusively Muslim-owned, and thus the responsibility of serving food that complies with the halaal requirements rests with each respective Muslim entrepreneur.

In line with this point, some of the eateries mentioned above are NOT officially halaal-certified, but are generally accepted as being halaal – as their owners are Muslim.

That said, CapeTownMagazine.com cannot guarantee each restaurant’s individual compliance, and therefore, we advise that prospective patrons should phone ahead to enquire further in regard to this issue before dining.
