House of H: The Graffiti-Laden Urban Hangout With a Rooftop and Secret Maze
The inner-city gem where locals eat and keep coming back
This is the spot by the famous former Madame Zingara group exec chef that evolved from a parking lot into everyone’s favourite restaurant. So well-loved is this place, that fans drive over 30km to come and hang out here.
Maybe it’s the Marmite jar-shaped chairs, maybe it’s the decor reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic hideaway, or maybe it’s the R105 chicken or mushroom burgers that come with three salads, chips, and chilli sauce in a skull-shaped bottle. Or the big-ass slow roasted ribs.
THIS IS A WAITER-FREE ZONE
There are no waiters here. The ground floor of House of H uses a self-service system for food and drinks. As you enter, you collect a point of sale swipe card attached to a lanyard. When you order drinks at the bar counter, the bartender swipes your card accordingly. When you’re ready to eat, go to the kitchen and the chef will let you know what’s on the menu. Order directly from the chef, and once it’s ready, choose your sides and collect your meal.
When it’s time to leave, head to the front desk and the cashier will ring up your card. This service method is especially great for large groups because there’s no confusion about splitting the bill.
PRIVATE EVENTS – RESTAURANT OR ON THE ROOFTOP
There is no venue hire at this refreshingly laid back restaurant, made even more lovable by its owners Heinrich Koen and his wife, Christina (known as “H” and “Poppie”). The entire venue, from restaurant to rooftop, is an amazing setting for social activations. Brands, including Levis and Woolworths, have used it, and it was the perfect site for CapeTownMagazine.com’s biggest Instameet because of its gritiness and graffiti (and the hidden maze).
For a minimum spend of R20 000 to R40 000 (R200-400 per head) you get the downstairs restaurant with food, drink and 10% service fee for 80 guests. Mains are a choice of burgers, fish and chips, rump, sirloin or soup and desserts are included. The rooftop accomodates 120 guests for a minimum spend of R20 000 to R30 000 (R175-R275 per head) and includes snacks like mini burgers, wings and brisket vetkoek. All the food is halaal friendly.
VIEWS FOR DAYS AT THE ROOFTOP BAR
The rooftop is a spacious inner-city escape with panoramic views. There’s colourful and expressive graffiti on the walls, a rustic mini bar and a mish mash of seating options on the outdoor patio that includes a couch, ottomon and bamboo chairs. You can order your food downstairs and bring it to the rooftop, where in winter a section is closed off and heaters are turned on to make it toasty.
THERE’S A SPECIAL MOST DAYS OF THE WEEK
For winter House of H is running two main specials: The two-for-one special of their big-ass 800g ribs ends 29 July 2019. The slow roasted beef ribs are worth a try any day. You can also get a 500g steak with chips and a side to share for R280 on Steak Knife Tuesday.
The rooftop bar is also open from Wednesday to Saturday and they host special hip hop karaoke nights on every first Thursdays.
