Who doesn’t love a road trip?

Even a true local will find something new to discover in and around Cape Town

Last updated: 2 February 2021

Have you fully explored the colours of Bo-Kaap or the incredible local art in Langa? Have you seen where the two oceans meet (you can literally see the line), or eaten the best fish and chips in town while watching a giant seal in Kalk Bay? Playing tourist in your own city is a great reminder of why Cape Town is one of the world's top cities to visit.

"Kiff Kombi Tours is all about giving visitors and locals a view of Cape Town that you may not have seen before,” says Kiff Kombi Tours founder Drew Campbell. “We want to bring something fresh and vibrant to the tourism industry, something that lets you feel the city as much as you see it.”

Kiff Kombi buses are distinctive: they’re hands-down the happiest, most colourful, possibly loudest (in a good way) vehicle you'll see on the roads. So what exactly does Kiff Kombi Tours offer, you ask?

Every South African knows a 'barbeque' will never top a braai, and the Wine, Beer & Biltong Safari tour will show you exactly why. You'll head out to the idyllic Stellenbosch vineyards for some breathtaking views and biltong snacks. For lunch, you'll be treated to a real showstopper: an authentic braai at Soul Barrel Brewing Co. You'll get to dig into lamb chops, boerewors rolls and gourmet braai sides and salads. But all dietary requirements are catered for, says Campbell. Then let your lunch settle with some wildlife views of zebra, wildebeest and springbok at Remhoogte Wine Estate.

Price: All scheduled tours are R1100pp. Private tours range from R1100 - R2100 depending on group size
Length: 7 - 8 hours

The Kiff Kombi's Urban Safari Tour is exactly what a local needs to (re)experience the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, District Six's rich history, and any street art lovers' dream: Woodstock. Plus, vegans and vegetarians are in for a treat as you'll head over to Royale Eatery – a restaurant famous for its vegan burgers – in Claremont for lunch. The day will only get better with a winding drive through the Constantia wine valley, straight over Chapman's Peak Drive right into the scenic Cape Point Vineyards in Noordhoek. By the end, the tour will take its bow at a secret sundowner spot that is perfect for that no-filter-needed post for the gram – but we'll leave you to discover where that is.

Length: 7 - 8 hours
Pick up time: 11am

Very few people can say they’ve reached the most south-western point of Africa, but in Cape Town, we’re lucky enough to get that chance. Kiff Kombi’s Road Trip tour will take you to the most far-reaching place in the world, the Cape of Good Hope. There you’ll see zebra, eland, ostriches, baboons, seals, whales and the most smartly dressed animal we have, the penguin. Lunch is served at Buffels Bay (watch out for baboons) then you’ll head back out to catch up with a giant seal or two in Kalk Bay, followed by that perfect Instagram shot at the Muizenberg colourful beach huts.

As the craft beer craze, the gin trend in Cape Town has been stratospheric, so much so that Cape Town has been dubbed the new gin capital of the world. On the pulse of all things cool, Kiff Kombi naturally launched a gin tour of Cape Town: The Gin Jol. Here, nobody has to be designated driver and everyone can safely join in the fun. The tour visits four gin distilleries/bars that have put Cape Town on the world's gin map. The tour includes three gin tastings at a different distillery with their respective pairings, plus some party snacks to help line the stomach.

Kiff Kombi’s Penguins, Peninsula & Pinotage tour has everything a nature lover would need: penguins, seals, a seaside lunch and coastal views. You’ll start your journey in Hout Bay then venture up to a WWII army base in Chapman’s Peak. From there you’ve got Kalk Bay seals to visit, antique fishing boats to marvel at, a seaside lunch to dine on and a trip to surfer’s paradise: Muizenberg beach. Here you can snap the perfect Instagram shot of the famous colourful beach huts.

Try a biltong and wine pairing at Marianne Wine Estate in Stellenbosch followed by craft beer tasting at Soul Barrel Brewing Co in Paarl. While you’re there, lunch will be served at La Grapperia Bistro along with a gin tasting at Wilderers Gin. With a sweet finish, Kiff Kombi Tours will end of the day with a de Villiers chocolate tasting.

The Splendour in the Winelands tour is a wine lover's heaven. It's got everything you'll need: four wine farm visits, a deli platter & cheese/biltong board, lunch and a wine & chocolate pairing. First stop will be at one of the most instagrammable wine farms in the Western Cape for some locally produced meats, cheese, and wine. Take a break and refuel with a sit-down lunch at Tokara Delicatessen. Tokara’s chef Carolize Coetzee’s will prepare an entirely locally grown and ethically farmed à la carte menu of Springbok Tartare, bonsmara beef or potato gnocchi with butternut, coriander, & coconut curry sauce and more. Finally, the perfect end to any tour is a sweet one with a wine and chocolate pairing with local Chocolatier, Richard von Geusau.

The craft beer movement has exploded in the Western Cape. So much so, that there are now more than 50 breweries in and around Cape Town. To honour our love of craft beer, Kiff Kombi has created two versions of the popular Craft Beer Safari tour. There's one for the Stellenbosch region and one for Cape Town and surrounding areas. Both versions include four brewery visits and tastings as well as an authentic South African lunch braai, all of which you can enjoy safely without sacrificing the fun when you’re designated driver. Plus, both experiences are perfect for bachelor bachelorette parties and year-end functions.

Every local knows the Mother City is an overflowing well of delicious and authentic tastes. There are sweet and sticky koesisters in front of the brightly coloured houses in Bo-Kaap and a cup of coffee from the ‘World’s Best Coffee Shop’ as rated by The Daily Telegraph. The Cape Town Sights & Bites tour route will take you all over the city. Your route will start with some samosas and koesisters in the Bo Kaap. If you think you’ve tasted authentic Cape Malay flavours before think again. Then comes lunch in the Klein Steenberg range in Constantia. Finally, to end the day, Kiff Kombi will take you to one of their most top secret sunset spots. Don’t bother looking for hints online (we’ve tried). Kiff Kombi is giving nothing away.

Before you head out, there are a few essential Covid-19 safety rules to know. It is mandatory to wear a mask before starting the tour. No guest will be allowed onto the kombi without one. Guests must choose one seat on the bus and remain there, "no musical chairs," says Campbell. Before each venue, each guests' temperatures will be checked, and hands will be sanitized. If you feel unwell before the tour, you are required to immediately advise the Kiff Kombi tour.
