Gin tastings, gin-making, delicious food, live music + Friday night markets

Spend the weekend tasting some award-winning local gins at the new Distillers & Union – they also have gin-making courses if you’re feeling fancy. You could also let the kids run wild at Redberry Farm while you sip on a delicious strawberry Rose gin fizz. 

GO CHRISTMAS SHOPPING AT A NIGHT MARKET

Bring your kids and pets along to the Boschendal Friday Night Market. There are festive workshops for the children. You can picnic on the sprawling lawns of the Boschendal Wine Estate or visit food stalls like The Oyster Guy, Aniseed and Boschendal’s own bakery with a variety of delicious snacks. Start from 20 November, the Festive Pop-up Shop will be open at Boschendal Friday Night Market.

Try your hand at crafting the perfect gin yourself by taking part in a gin-making course in which you can personalise everything, from selecting the fragrant botanical spices, the alcohol level and even the logo. Plus, unwind to the soulful voice of Dan Kelly – sounds like Elvis – every Saturday at Distillers & Union.

SPEND THE DAY TRYING TASTY TREATS AT A FOOD TRUCK MARKET

At the Fort Food Truck Market, you’ll find biltong, boerewors rolls, curries and more South African classics. Plus, they’ve got gourmet burgers and a whole range of delicious Mexican food. As Fort Wynyard is a military base and artillery garrison, you can join a guided tour of the fascinating maze of tunnels and bunkers to work up an appetite. There is also a stage for eclectic live music at the Fort Food Truck Market.

LIVE MUSIC, VINTAGE WINE AND FOOD AT NEETHLINGHOF

Neethlingshof Wine Estate, with its stunning vineyards, vintage wines and delicious food, is hosting singer-songwriter Tyan Odendal live on Wednesday night. If you can't make it to the performance in person, shows are still being streamed online via their Facebook page. Plus, they’re bringing in a delicious menu of pizza and light bites from the chefs behind The Salt Road at Neethlingshof's Wine Down Wednesday sessions.

LIVE MUSIC, GIN AND TAPAS AT THE STATION ON BREE

When it comes to gin The Station on Bree knows what’s up. Every Saturday sample some local and international award-winning wines at The Station’s Mini Gin Fest. It’s 5 double-gin and tonics – fruity garnishes, tall glasses and all. If you’re hungry, their tapas menu has chicken strips, chorizo with guacamole, bacon poppers, calamari and squid. There’s lots more to tickle your fancy. Unwind with all that good food and drinks to live music every week at The Station on Bree.

HIP HOP SUNDAYS AT TIGER’S MILK ON KLOOF

Cape Town’s fierce female duo Fizz & Shai-A are hitting up Tiger’s Milk Kloof Street’s decks every Sunday with some of their crowd-favourite beats. Plus, dive into a delicious avo, feta and bacon pizza with a half-priced cocktail, beer or glass of wine during the Pick Your Poison happy hour between 4pm and 6pm at Tiger’s Milk Hip Hop Sundays.

THE EARTH FAIR FOOD MARKET IS OPEN FOR VISITORS

The Earth Fair Food and Shopping Market is opening its doors with a host of vendors. Think delicious cheesy nachos, handmade cheese, flaky croissants and fresh bread. Plus, treat yourself to your next mid-week adventure as the market is open every Wednesday evening making it the perfect midweek date night at the Earth Fair Food and Shopping Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

HEAD DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH THIS 7DE LAAN SET

Gansbaai couple Coenie and Christa Van Dyk have dedicated the last 10 years to building a miniature town in their backyard of the popular local television show 7de Laan. Entrance is free, and nostalgia is guaranteed for this miniature 7de Laan set.

NOW IS THE TIME TO PICK THOSE STRAWBERRIES

At Redberry Farm in George, the strawberry fields are open for families to stock their baskets full with bright red, ripe strawberries. Bring the kids to run around the largest permanent hedge maze in the Southern Hemisphere while you kick up your feet and enjoy a strawberry-inspired lunch. The Red Shed restaurant serves up a delicious Strawberry Rosé Gin Fizz. There are also mini train trips and pony rides at Redberry Farm.

THIS MONTH HARRINGTONS IS HOSTING ALTYDGEDACHT WINES

Altydgedacht Wine Estate in Durbanville is sending in some of their top-notch wines. Think a bubbly MCC to start the night off right, followed by their unusual Barbera Pinotage and of course their ever-popular Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a sip and swirl kind of night no wine-lover would want to miss. Plus, choose between four delicious mains made to complement each wine you taste at Harringtons Cocktail Lounge

THE WATERSHED IS BACK IN BUSINESS

The V&A Waterfront’s Watershed has reopened its doors, which means you can once again shop 100% local from over 150 stalls at South Africa’s biggest market for art, design and craft. You’ll find ceramists, sculptors, painters, jewellers, clothing and shoe designers as well as textile and furniture makers. You will also find creators of beauty brands in the recently added beauty section within the V&A Waterfront’s Watershed.
