What Tourists Taught Us: Moyo at Eden on The Bay is Perhaps the Most Capetonian Beach Restaurant

Just 30 mins from town, a view to die for, awesome vibe and food worth talking about, eaten on a surfboard with your feet in the water


It’s not every day tourists teach us something new about Cape Town. It happens, though. moyo Blouberg at Eden on The Bay might just be the city’s best worst-kept secret. It’s packed with tourists from all over, every day. And they come for many good reasons.

Think crocodile tail pie with chilli pineapple salsa and a Mozambican rum and raspberry cocktail, followed by beetroot velvet cheesecake. And you’re eating it in the shade, on a Corona surfboard with your feet in the water. There’s a live DJ playing weekend afternoons and you’re looking out over Big Bay with a view of Table Mountain and Robben Island all in one go.

Why aren’t more Capetonians eating here every day? We have a hunch: Big Bay is considered a bit of a touristy area (so, of course, the tourists discovered it first). And the Eden on The Bay was specifically built surrounded by holiday flats. So maybe we Capetonians think of it as a tad too touristy. But let’s dispel that myth right now by showing you one image:

Eden on The Bay itself is really something to explore. And there are plenty of shops and eateries around. You’ll immediately know moyo Eden on The Bay when you see it though. Or hear it, more likely. It’s by far the liveliest, vibiest and most popular spot here, with live DJs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon, four or five different “sections”, over 400 seating capacity, 100 staff members to keep it all ticking along and a constant influx of new tables – people coming for breakfast, lunch, kids' birthday parties, drinks, birthdays, events, supper – all-day long.

The reason? This moyo restaurant has been one of the driving forces in a dramatic change in how the entire moyo restaurant group does business.

“You should have seen this place a few months ago to fully appreciate what we’ve done here,” says owner Duane Van Tonder. “The old moyo was very much built around the ‘traditional African’ style. It was the same here as it was all around the country. Everything was just a different shade of earthy brown. It was nothing but wood and carvings.

“But we changed all that. We brought in bright colours, the metals and a whole new vibey urban African style. And we married it with our beach style, brought in the surfboards and the shallow pool. It really is fresh, new and exciting, but still African and still so Capetonian at the core.”

And moyo Blouberg is worth checking out just for the decor alone. It’s the first moyo to have the all-new colour-rich logo up on the walls. One of the main features inside is the back wall with brightly coloured recesses, each with a unique and decorative little African curio to discover. Then there’s the live music stage, right smack in the middle of the dining area, featuring a unique jazz-club-style mural by local artists as a backdrop.

Outside, the brand-new Corona bar and deck with DJ booth (live DJs Friday, Saturday and Sundays) was just launched this summer. And then the ultimate lunch experience is the front section, where Duane and the team had a shallow pool dug and placed a whole row of Corona surfboard tables with benches. Kick off your shoes and have lunch with your feet in the water to that awesome Big Bay view.

The white-painted wrought iron around the Red Bull bar really plays off well with the rest of the decor – this is where cocktails come from, and bottles of Skyy Vodka with Red Bull are served like a little celebration with sparklers and big silver trays filled with ice.

But moyo Blouberg is family orientated, too. The kiddies area here is a proudly no-tech zone. “We want the kids to be kids. To come and play and interact and have fun. So there are no phones, gaming consoles or TVs, none of that,” says Duane. Although, for mom and dad’s peace of mind, he adds, "we still have cameras in the play area with monitors in the restaurant so you can keep an eye on the little ones while they play."

And then there’s the food. Which we’ve kind of saved for last for good reason. If you don’t know moyo, they specialise in African food experiences. But remember, this is an all-new kind of moyo. You’ll find way more exciting and exotic foods here, inspired by a far wider range of African countries than ever before. All curated and expertly redefined by the group’s executive chef.

From Soweto-style chicken wings to crocodile tail pie and a peri-peri chicken liver bunny chow. From beef dombolo (traditional beef stew with steamed dumplings) to North African foods and tagines, to samp paella and maize-crumbed shrimp. There are breakfasts, light lunches, salads, a kids menu and a dinner menu worth exploring.

What makes moyo unique is that they update their menu regularly. If you were here in 2018, there’ll be 10 new items on the menu now. “Our chefs test new recipes during our winter set menu evenings,” says moyo Blouberg GM Oliver Hart. “The 10 ones that do really well go onto the menu and we remove 10 other items to keep things fresh.”

That’s how the must-try red velvet beetroot cheesecake made it onto the dessert menu, incidentally. It was last year’s best performer. And it’s well worth ordering it and seeing why.

The Double Black Berry Blaze. The African Sunset. The Cherri Gin Smash. And the R&R, made with Mozambican Tipo Tinto rum and raspberry base. You’re not going to want for special and unique cocktails here.

They have four different cocktail menus, including the classics, cocktails by the jug, virgin and moyo originals. Perfect for sipping at sundown looking out over the Atlantic – with your feet in the water, of course.

TIP: Come on a Friday between 12pm and 6pm when all their Classic-E moyo Cocktails are R39 (usually around R79) and you can get any 500ml local draught beer for R25. Discover after work drinks at moyo.

“Our space is very versatile,” Duane says, “we can have the live DJs on the decks in the afternoon, and then close the sliding doors after sunset for an evening dinner experience.”

And they can accommodate up to 400 people, with plentiful different table shapes and sizes. This makes it a great space for anything from birthdays to functions and get-togethers, whether you want more of party atmosphere or a nice, quiet dinner with good food and attentive service.

On the whole, we at found moyo Blouberg at Eden on The Bay one of the most exciting hidden gems to check out in 2019. We know we’re going back there as soon as possible. Hungry for more.
