Ramen, bao buns and flan cheesecake at Kanji Ramen
Last updated: Tuesday, 26 March 2024
The latest addition to Cape Town’s ramen scene is found on the vibey corner of Kloof Nek Road. It’s the kind of place where you settle in and order Japanese small plates to share, or swing by before a night out: it’s opposite the Power and Glory and The Moveable Feast.

There are all kinds of small plates including gyoza, edamame, takoyaki and kaarage. Image: Kanji Ramen
Kanji Ramen is a collaboration between Seelan Sundoo (owner of Sundoo in Sea Point) and veteran restauranter Gavin Hagger (of Jerry’s Burger Bar).
The restaurant has bar stools that face the bustling street corner, and comfy black leather booths. Japanese hand fans lay on each table and an entire wall is made up of dragon artwork. Plus, they’re open till midnight on a popular strip if you want to grab dinner or get a nightcap.

It’s an ideal spot to share small plates, like spinach and mushroom or chicken and cabbage gyoza dumplings; bok choi with garlic and soy; fried crispy chicken with red chilli; or baby spinach & parmesan salad with truffle.
The menu also has three kinds of bao buns and four different ramen bowls to choose from. Each ramen bowl has hand-pulled garlic, egg, soy or miso corn noodles, and tender slices of meat. There’s double chicken, beef, or pork, and a vegan mushroom ramen with tofu in a miso broth.
If you have room for something sweet, try the Japanese flan cheesecake. It’s light and fluffy, topped with a miso-honey glaze.

Kanji Ramen is open: Monday to Saturday, 4pm to 12am
Find it: 12-16 Kloof Nek Road | Tamboerskloof | Cape Town (opposite Power and Glory)
Price range: Sharing plates from R60; Ramen from R150
