Discover Stories From Africa In The Tunnels Of A Silo

Kids interact with artworks through creative play, drawing, writing, reading and storytelling

Remember when all creatures were equal – when animals could speak and plants magically had personalities? These ideas could inspire beautiful works of art. The  Children’s Interactive Tour is designed to facilitate children’s exploration of a child-friendly art exhibition titled And So The Stories Ran Away. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 are invited to join a multi-sensory discovery at  Zeitz MOCAA in the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District. The tour takes place on Saturdays for the next few weeks.

Running until 30 March 2020, And So The Stories Ran Away celebrates stories from Africa. Students from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, the Ruth Prowse School of Art, and the Nyanga Arts Development Centre created artworks inspired by 18 proudly African stories.

AFRICAN STORIES
The tour guide will choose five or six of the 18 stories that have been interpreted through the sculptural pieces in the exhibition. For example:

  • The Tale of Mouse and the Stories that Ran Away – Nigerian Ekoi story

  • The Guardian of the Boat – a creation story from central Africa

  • The Nya-nya Bulembu – inspired by a folk tale from Swaziland

  • The Blanket of the Sun – inspired by San folklore

  • Nkanyamba – inspired by a traditional Xhosa folk tale

  • Perfectly Balanced – inspired by the sacred story of the Tree of Life – a Zulu creation story

WHAT TO EXPECT
Children and parents meet in the Atrium Bowl at 11am where a museum educator from the on-site Centre For Art Education or one of the artists will meet them and facilitate the tour.

The tour focuses on a different selection of African stories at each event. The interaction with artworks may include creative play, drawing, writing, reading and storytelling with all activities designed to suit children of varying abilities and skill levels.

The children will be making their own drawings or storybooks based on their interactions. This is basically a storytelling session in the presence of interactive artworks where children will be prompted to draw and/or write in response to what they have seen and heard.

Art supplies will be provided and you don’t need to bring anything, but children should wear comfortable clothes because they may be sitting or drawing on low chairs or  on the floor.

IN THE TUNNELS OF THE MUSEUM
The tour will take place in the tunnels of the museum on the lower ground floor (level -1). There is seating in Centre For Art Education classrooms but the children will spend much of their time on floors in the tunnels.

ATTENDING THE CHILDREN’S INTERACTIVE TOUR
Attending the tour is free of charge with museum admission or membership (which starts at R290).

Because only 15 children may attend each event, you must reserve your spot by booking online. On the day, simply pay your admission fee or present your museum membership. For more information, contact the organisers directly on education@zeitzmocaa.museum
