Hidden Inner-City Gem Where Locals Eat And Keep Coming Back
Find out why locals and even those from further afield keep coming back to this awesome post-apocalyptic hideout filled with quirky wonderments and food so good that you’ll struggle to find a table after 8pm
The hidden spot with the famous chef (former executive chef at the Madame Zingara group) that evolved from a parking lot into everyone’s favourite restaurant. So well-loved is this place, that fans drive over 30km to come and hang out here. Maybe it’s the Marmite jar-shaped chairs, maybe it’s the decor reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic hideaway, or maybe it’s the R105 burgers with three amazing salads, chips, and the chilli sauce in the skull-shaped bottle. All in all, House of H, owned by Heinrich and his wife, Christina (known as “H” and “Poppie”), is refreshingly laid-back, and with unusual art and music, is more than just a restaurant.
THIS IS A WAITER-FREE ZONE
There are no waiters here. The ground floor of House of H uses an ingenious self-service system for food and drinks. As you enter, you collect a point of sale swipe card attached to a lanyard. When you order drinks at the bar counter, the bartender will swipe your card accordingly. When you’re ready to eat, go to the kitchen and the chef will let you know what’s on the menu. Order directly from the chef, and once it’s ready, choose your sides and collect your meal.
When it’s time to leave, head to the front desk and the cashier will ring up your card. (Remember to return your card because failure to do so could result in a R1500 fine.) This service method is especially great for large groups because there’s no confusion about splitting the bill.
GREAT FOR GROUPS
The laid-back vibe makes House of H an amazing venue for groups. Big brands and companies including Levis and Woolworths love using House of H as a venue and it’s great for social activations. And, says Heinrich, House of H is very popular with people from the northern suburbs who regularly make large table bookings. Nothing is too much trouble for the House of H team, if you have special requirements or budgets for your group or function, they are happy to sit down and customise a set menu especially for you.
VIEWS FOR DAYS AT THE ROOFTOP BAR
A spacious inner-city escape with panoramic views of the city and mountains. The notorious rooftop bar has been an organic development that has been evolving over a two-year period. When it is complete, it will host a tattoo artist, a barber, three bars and a kitchen with breathtaking views of the city. It should be finalised by December 2018, but until then, you can enjoy the vibe after 4pm.
House of H also provides rentable space for small businesses to show their work. The space rotates periodically and currently, Hustle by Hadlay Kent allows you to have a customised T-shirt printed, buy honey or a beautiful leather wallet that can be personalised. Hustle will be there until the end of October.

H and Cristina thoroughly enjoy the daily running of a restaurant and interacting with their customers and are very hands-on. H loves entertaining and Christina gets herself covered in paint as she keeps up the maintenance and painting. It’s a labour of love through and through.
