AfriCamps Luxury Glamping Camps in the Western Cape

Experience nature in style with boutique camping experts

AfriCamps Boutique Camping is all about glamping (that is, glamourous + camping) at some of the most beautiful authentic working farms and estates. The company's founders Cape Town-based Dutch business partners, Manou Bleumink and Jeroen van Rootselaar, believe that the best travel experiences are often those that allow visitors to get up close and personal with the landscape, its people and food.

AfriCamps – along with carefully selected hosts – seek to create a unique outdoor affair authentic to the glamping site’s region. Read more about AfriCamps and how the company works.

Each tent is fully equipped with a spacious kitchen and lounge area, two comfortable bedrooms and one private bathroom. Everything, from the furniture to the actual glamping tent, is locally made with a key focus on sustainability and educating community members to become skilled – in sewing, woodwork, welding, painting, electrical skills and more – through the creation of the custom-designed tents. This notion continues to landowners and the entire glamping experience as visitors are encouraged to explore and become involved in local farm living as well as learn more about typical South African landscapes and the magnificent fauna and flora renowned to the region.

Ultimately, AfriCamps Boutique Camping combines the flexibility of a self-drive holiday; the remoteness of a camping trip and the convenience of a beautiful fully furnished self-catering unit all under one canvas-roof.

AfriCamps currently operates five glamping camps in the Western Cape; Ingwe in Plettenberg Bay and Stanford Hills in Stanford are the most recent. AfriCamps Klein Karoo in Oudtshoorn, AfriCamps at Kam’ Bati in Swellendam and AfriCamps at Pat Busch Nature Reserve in Robertson are the first three. This means glampers can pick their ultimate holiday destination or choose to travel from one luxury glamping site to another.

AfriCamps at Ingwe in Plettenberg Bay
It’s at the centre of the Garden Route, in The Crags. You get both lush forest and fynbos and the sea, as its embraced by the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay. The elevated tents have views of the rolling green hills and valleys and the Tsitsikamma Mountain range. There’s a swimming pool and sports field at the site (available, unless they are booked out for a function). You can take a guided hike or go it alone and even do a night hike. There are team building and outdoor adventure activities for people coming in groups. It’s a great spot for a school, too, for those wanting to teach kids about conversation. If you're there privately, head out into the holiday town of Plettenberg Bay, visit the wine estates around or perch on your private deck and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Ingwe forest.
Facilities Fireplace, air-conditioning, electric blankets
Activities Canoe up the Bitou and Keurbooms River to a visit the wine estates close by. Take the kids to the animal sanctuaries: Monkeyland, the primate sanctuary; Birds of Eden, home to over 3,500 birds; Jukani Wildlife, and Hog Hollow Horse Trails.
TIP: Camp manager Debbie Femor is an environmental educator. Join her on one of her forest hikes.

AfriCamps at Stanford Hills Estate in Stanford
This camp will be favoured by foodies: it’s set on a boutique wine farm and Stanford is a slow food destination with some interesting chefs. The Stanford Hills Estate restaurant The Tasting Room, with views of the valley, has a menu that changes daily and the food is made using vegetables from the farm and local produce. The site is on the foothill of the Klein River Mountain range overlooking a dam and the Stanford Valley. This foodie delight is only a 15-minute drive from Hermanus and can be reached from Cape Town in two hours
Facilities: Fireplace, air-conditioning, electric blankets, a children’s play area and babysitting services on request
Activities: Swim in the dam, try fishing, go horse riding or hiking. Try quad and mountain biking. You can also go whale watching on a small airplane that leaves from the farm’s private landing strip. If you’re more into leisure, there’s wine tasting on the farm of the estate’s award-winning range of wines. The owner-managers once owned a restaurant.
TIP: Babysitting services are available on request. This is also a great spot to stock up on special wines: The estate has six wine labels exported to 11 countries.

AfriCamps Klein Karoo in Oudtshoorn
Located on a beautifully remote spot overlooking a large dam on one of the country’s largest working ostrich farms with the Swartberg Mountains in the distance, AfriCamps Klein Karoo is actually a mere 10-minute drive from Oudtshoorn (and approximately five hours from Cape Town). Here, you’ll find five luxury boutique camping tents, skillfully positioned around a large water dam, each equipped to accommodate five people. It’s a peaceful place that provides the rare opportunity to see large-scale ostrich farming in action. The land is also home to herds of free-roaming indigenous animals, including waterbuck, springbok, nyala, kudu, impala, eland and blue wildebeest, which gather to drink at sunset in perfect view of the decks of each tent. Located slightly northwest of the Garden Route, about an hour from George, AfriCamps Klein Karoo is the ideal mid-way stop between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and the perfect base from which to explore Oudtshoorn and its attractions, including the Cango Caves.

AfriCamps at Pat Busch Nature Reserve in Robertson
Set in the spectacular Pat Busch Mountain Reserve – 2000 hectares of incredible natural fynbos, streams, mountain dams and various wildlife – in Robertson (approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Cape Town), this AfriCamps glamping site is a nature lovers utopia and is ideal for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and become one with the countryside again (all from the comforts of an AfriCamp tent, of course). Tucked away from the main farm house in between Cape fynbos, the five luxury five-man tents – although somewhat close to one another – provide ample privacy and are aptly positioned to overlook the gorgeous Langeberg mountain range allowing for guests to feel as if they’re the only ones on-site. The Mountain Reserve itself provides visitors with endless possibilities including several walking trails, waterdams ideal for swimming, fishing and canoeing, good bird watching opportunities as well as a glistering nine-metre swimming pool.
