Our pick of seven of the best events and things to do in Cape Town this weekend from Friday 25 May to Sunday 27 May.

Pick any weekend of the year in Cape Town and you’re bound to find a host of events planned throughout the city. From winter wine festivals to disco grooves and bridal bashes, this weekend’s packed with a bunch of activities bound to leave you feeling inspired, energised and entertained.

7 great things to do in and around Cape Town this weekend.

1. CreativeMornings Cape Town

Creative Coffee Mornings is an intimate monthly morning lecture series that aims to gather Cape Town’s creatives for a brief motivational talk by an invited visionary. This Friday, renowned designer, architect and urbanist Mokena Makeka will be sharing his journey. So, if the morning happens to be free, pop in to the Upper Eastside Hotel in Woodstock for a good bout of inspiration and a complimentary cup of quality coffee. Attendees are encouraged to register beforehand and arrive at 8.30am; the whole event will be over by 9.30am and is entirely free of charge.

2. Cape Gate Bridal Fair

If a grand wedding is on the cards then this major bridal event - held this weekend at the Cape Gate Shopping Centre in Brackenfell - is an absolute must. Inspiration will abound in the form of gorgeous gowns, flower and cake displays, specialist photographers and more. A generous grand prize will also be up for grabs. The fair runs from Friday to Sunday from 12pm to 6pm and entrance is free. Grooms are more than welcome, but ladies, this one’s really for you.

3. TOPS Gugulethu Wine Festival

Wine and dine in Gugs this weekend! Over the course of Friday and Saturday afternoons (4pm - 9pm and 3pm - 9pm respectively) more than 50 exhibitors will showcase their goods at the Gugulethu Square Mall. Festival-goers can sample a wide range of premium wines, sway to the sounds of live entertainment and indulge in delicious snacks at the SPAR food court. Tickets go for R80 per person and city centre coach transfers can be arranged to and from the venue.

4. TEDx Table Mountain 2012

If sustainable change is a matter of interest then put this once-off discussion-based event on the calendar. Taking place on Sunday from 12pm to 6pm at the Fugard Theatre, TEDx invites a number of expert speakers to explore and debate questions that centre on the complex relationship between humans and the earth. Attendees are bound to leave feeling inspired and sufficiently challenged. Tickets cost R250 per person and are available through Webtickets.co.za.

5. Annual Pole Dancing Showcase

Expand your horizons this Saturday and book a seat at the Artscape Theatre to watch BodyMind Studios students demonstrate their pole dancing skills. This unique exhibition of ability and bodily strength isn’t the stuff of an average evening, but it’ll certainly make for an entertaining one. The show starts at 8.15pm and is approximately two hours in length; tickets can be bought from Computicket for R195 per person.

6. MoFunk Party

Get your groove on at opulent nightclub The Reserve this Friday evening for a 70s-style bash of epic proportions. Launched in the Mother City in 1998, this legendary party pays homage to the era of Motown music with DJs spinning a heady mix of soul, funk, disco and afrobeat. Doors open at 9pm; cover charge is R50 per person – come spandexed up and ready for guaranteed good times.

7. The Cape Town Good Food and Wine Show

The CTICC is the place to be from Thursday 24 May until Sunday 27 May, particularly if you’re an avid food fan or vino devotee. Cooking workshops, brandy cocktail and canapé pairings, Lindt chocolate demonstrations, book signings and wine sampling are but some of the activities that will dominate this year’s premiere culinary event. Celebrity chefs and gourmet gurus will entertain eager adults while kids are kept busy with arts and crafts demos. The show kicks off each day at 10am and tails to a close at 7pm; ticket prices range from R50 to R95 per person.
