Take A Look At The Thrilling New Skatepark in Woodstock
The new recreational space is a community-driven initiative aimed at motivating and integrating the youth through sport.
Skateboarders rejoice – a new skateboard park, situated on the eastern side of the Woodstock Town Hall Park, recently opened in Woodstock. With the goal of re-energising the area in a way that benefits the community, this new skateboard park aims to empower the youth and enable them to exercise their talents as well as encouraging others in the area to pick up some new skills in a fun, safe and motivating environment.
The skateboard park has been long awaited, since its proposal in 2014 as part of the World Design Capital co-design ward project, and the opening was met with lots of excitement as the avid skateboarders in the community were involved in contributing to the planning, location and design of this exciting space.
“The skateboard community is very happy to have its first transitional skatepark. It is a concrete ramp that imitates a wave, which is how skateboarding started. It involves lots of ramps and has curvatures as well. We love this skatepark,” said Shuaib Philander, the 2015 South African skateboard champion from Woodstock, who has been skateboarding for 13 years.
Not only is this recreational space invigorating for the local community, but it will, in turn, allow skateboarders around the city to come together and make use of the area together, creating a connected and diverse skateboarding culture in Cape Town.
