Ficks: Hermanus’ New Idyllic Summer Hangout

Set on the edges of a sparkling blue tidal pool and ocean, Ficks will serve pintxos and wine

Just in time for summer swims and sociable living, the owners of popular Dutchies in Hermanus have launched a sun-drenched bar and restaurant in Hermanus. Ficks is an outdoor eatery right on the sea, overlooking the 1930s tidal pool by the same name, and reimagined beautifully by Netherlands’ trio Joke, Just and Daan Gonggrijp, who’re behind the success of Dutchies on Grotto Beach.

“Our main aim in creating Ficks is to retain the sense of place, history and environment. These three principles have guided us throughout the design process and will continue once we are up and running,” says Joke Gonggrijp.

Ficks will be opening to the public VERY soon, and CapeTownMagazine.COM will be the first to let you know. Follow us on FacebookTwitter or Instagram

Proximity to the sea makes this spot special. It’s perched on decks overlooking this well-known tidal pool, with minimalist décor and lounge-style seating that take full advantage of the all-embracing views of the ocean.

The menu aims to encourage sociable eating. It focuses mainly on pintxos (pronounced “peen-chos”), a specific cuisine from Northern Spain, which can be shared. Think more-ish sweet-and-spicy marinated chicken wings or the complementary flavours of gigante beans with anchovies.

There’s some Central European influence, too: flammkuchen is made with a special base which is imported from the Netherlands and is freshly prepared over flames to make a thin and crispy base for a choice of toppings. The full menu, bar menu, and prices are yet to be announced.

When Fadzi Chapanduka was young, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. Then she landed up in the food industry and found an outlet for her creativity in the dishes she made. So her love affair with food began. Now she’s heading up the kitchen at Ficks.

Joining Fadzi is Chef Susan Thirion, who loves working with simple ingredients to prepare exceptional recipes. Together, they make Ficks’  food, cooked simply and full of flavour, and presented, beautifully.

In designing and building the structure, great care was taken to ensure the natural environment around the pool was kept intact. Trees and bushes were replanted and rocks found in the vicinity were used to build the border walls. The deck was manufactured using recycled wood from alien species, which were removed from forests in the Overberg region.

Safety has also been a strong focus. Ficks aims to be a secure social environment where the public can enjoy the eatery and surroundings, or swim in the magical pool. There’ll be after-hour security and the parking area is open and secure.

Ficks will open by the end of September. Subscribe to our social channels to find out when.
