A New Way to Experience the Cape: AfriCamps Luxury Camping
The outdoor living experts who introduced "glamping" to South Africa are expanding to more must-visit areas of the Western Cape
Boutique campsites with all the bells and whistles on idyllic and unspoilt pockets of land handpicked for super-special family holidays or the perfect weekend away. Whatever your opinion about camping, you’re about to experience the next level at AfriCamps.
Glamping is one thing (you’ve heard of the glam + camping trend by now, right?), but what AfriCamps’ Cape Town-based Dutch boutique camping concept developers Manou Bleumink and Jeroen van Rootselaar have created here in the Cape and a little further afield in SA is a series of really special experiences.
Take a look for yourself.

What you’ve just seen there are merely some of the eight incredible AfriCamps locations, with a custom-designed and SA-built luxury, en-suite five-person tent. It has every piece of furniture and amenity you could ask for, including air-conditioning, a cosy fireplace and even a wood-fired outdoor hot tub (available at Plett, Wilderness and Wellington camps). And it’s set on a private property in the forests of The Crags near Plettenberg Bay.
And every AfriCamps location is that special. See all 8 remarkable family holiday spots here.
“The idea of AfriCamps is to highlight the pleasures and romance of camping – being close to nature, enjoying the outdoors with family and friends, and escaping technology and city life – while sidestepping the disadvantages of camping out,” says Manou.
NEXT-LEVEL CAMPING: FOR EVERYONE
A few years ago, Manou and Jeroen realised that beautiful and enticing as the South African countryside is to explore, not everyone is properly equipped to get out there and enjoy camping out in nature – materially and psychologically. Think about conventional camping: communal loos, endless packing and unpacking, dirt, bugs, all that equipment you need to buy and lug along …
Nah, we want luxury camps with wooden decks overlooking unspoilt nature, with a fully-equipped kitchen and outdoor braai, a spacious private shower and a cosy bed you look forward to coming back to every night. And Manou and Jeroen get it.
Being fans of the outdoors themselves, the pair developed AfriCamps, the innovative new way of making adventure experiences accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
They developed their custom tents over a two-year period and set out to create boutique tented camps on a selection of private, working farms and estates along some of the Cape (and SA’s) most loved travel destinations, allowing you to get outdoors while still living comfortably (as holidays should be) and experience the landscape, nature, the local people and the food first-hand.
WHAT MAKES EVERY AFRICAMPS SO UNIQUE
AfriCamps is about appreciating farm life, learning the ins and outs of a real working farm, tasting traditional cuisine and local produce while exploring new areas and returning to the comfort of your boutique tent. And to do that, you can’t have a camp in a traditional, touristy campsite. That’s why AfriCamps flips the script:
AfriCamps forms partnerships with local landowners who understand hospitality and who have idyllic, unspoilt pockets of land suitable for boutique campsites. Owners prepare the land and basic services, including plumbing and electricity. AfriCamps erects its tents on the sites and manages reservations while the owners act as hosts: Interacting with guests when they arrive, providing secure hospitality and their own ranges of unique outdoor experiences.
“Partnering with the right landowners is central to our concept,” explains Manou. “They’re essentially ambassadors for their regions and their lively involvement with guests is one of the things that set us apart from other holiday options.”
8 CAMPSITES IN 8 LOCATIONS
You’ll find a brand-new AfriCamps at Mackers in Hazyview in Mpumalanga (opened in July 2018). The already popular spots are AfriCamps at Ingwe in Plettenberg Bay, AfriCamps Stanford Hills in the Overberg, AfriCamps Klein Karoo in Oudtshoorn, AfriCamps at Kam'bati in Swellendam and the AfriCamps at Pat Busch Mountain Reserve in Robertson. And now, there's AfriCamps at Oakhurst, Wilderness, on the Garden Route, and the new Cape Winelands AfriCamps at Doolhof Wine Estate in Wellington.
Each one is equipped with a number of custom-made boutique five-man AfriCamps tents. Get a taste of all 8 AfriCamps experiences here.
“Ultimately, we’d like to create an AfriCamps route across southern Africa,” says Manou. “We imagine families and friends traversing the region to experience outdoor living in very different settings, connecting with local farmers and their families while enjoying all the comforts and convenience of luxury accommodation."
The real kicker is that you can get this awesome outdoorsy-yet-luxury experience in some of the most beautiful parts of the Cape and South Africa for less (or the same price) than a luxe hotel stay. And, its made for family, friends and bonding. Now that’s really special.
Each campsite features several custom-made 55sqm AfriCamps five-man tents with fully- equipped kitchen, bathroom, spacious living area, two comfortable private bedrooms furnished with queen-sized beds and one with an extra bunk bed (all beds are XL 2m length) and an outdoor deck. Unique features such as hot tubs and swimming pools vary at each site, so read up more on each AfriCamps spot.
Tip: The campsites are good for large groups of friends and family, as well as romantic getaways. There are several spacious tents in each camp, but they each offer complete privacy.
