Steak, eggs, cheese or a classic masala curry gatsby, which would you choose?
In Cape Town the gatsby is an institution and one of the best places to get one is on Heerengracht Street in Foreshore at a gatsby gem of a restaurant called Mariams Kitchen. “When you are in the CBD, then Mariams will do the trick,” says CapeTownmagazine.com reader Pierre Estienne in our feature Best Gatsbys in Cape Town.

"It's enjoyed by everybody, " says owner and manager Shah Mia, who serves a wide variety of gatsbys, with the "most popular gatsby being the full steak, eggs and cheese gatsby".

Another crowd favourite is the masala steak gatsby, adds Shah. A lot of Mariams Kitchen’s guests enjoy their meal with a bit of chilli, but you can also order the non-spicy steak gatsby and choose some extra trimmings to make it suit your tastes.

Mariams Kitchen might have mastered the gatsby, but “we’re also really famous for our salomies”, says Shah, because they use paratha (a flatbread similar to a roti, but more flakey), which is what customers love most. Similar to the gatsby, you can fill it with your choice of steak, chicken, mince, beans or vegetables, all of which is cooked in a mix of Shah’s family secret spices.
